Signs That Let You Know Your Cat Is Not Feeling Well

Signs That Let You Know Your Cat Is Not Feeling Well

If Your Cat Starts Sleeping More Than Usual

More sleep can be a warning of a disease or sickness in your cat. If your cat would rather sleep than be held, that would be a sign that your cat is sick. Your cat’s sleep pattern may change abruptly, as they may start meowing all night long. Your cat may begin waking you up in the middle of the night if they are not feeling well. Cats do sleep many hours a day, but if they sleep and show no interest in what they used to, there is a health problem that needs immediate attention.

Their tail Position May Change.

A healthy cat generally has its tail pointing straight up. Sick cats stop raising their tails in the air and hang them down. They may stop swinging their tail from time to time. You can tell a lot about a cat by how its tail is hanging.

Eye Drainage

I have noticed that some cats seem to have more eye discharge when they are not feeling well. A cat with distemper will most likely have its eye glued shut due to drainage. Healthy cats have clean eyes ready to hunt for potential prey.

Sneezing

Cats indicate allergies or dryness in your home during the winter months by sneezing. If the sneezing gets worse, take your cat to your vet, as they may have a common respiratory virus. We can give out carts COVID by letting them sleep in bed with us if we have COVID. Certain flus can cross over from humans to cats. If your cat has a cold, a vaporizer can help relieve symptoms. You can wash their runny eyes with water and a soft towel.

Your Cat Hides All The Time

If your cat hides all of the time and does not come out to eat, they are genuinely ill. Cats like to go to an area where they will be alone when they pass, if possible. Your cat does not come anymore when you call him because he is ill.

Loss Of Interest In Things

Your cat stops playing with his favorite toys or games, and he no longer interacts with your other cats or visitors as he used to. If your cat used to sit on the windowsill every day and he stops doing that, that is one red flag that he is unwell. Your cat stops wanting to sleep in bed with you at night because he is not feeling well.

Sleeping In A Cold Bathtub

If your cat has a fever, he may start sleeping in your bathtub because it is generally cold and he wants to feel cooler. Cata will seek out cold or warm spots depending on how they feel at that moment.

Your Cat Has A Personality Change

A cat that is used to being quite docile may become aggressive, biting or attacking you and hissing at you or your other cats in your household. Cats will do their best to let you know how they are feeling, but you must watch for their subtle signs.

Things You Should Never Let Your Cat Play With

Things You Should Never Let Your Cat Play With

Office Supplies And More

Never let your cat play with rubber bands, as they may eat them. If a rubber band gets lodged in the intestine, your cat may need surgery to remove the rubber band. String-to-tie packages are also hazardous; if your cat swallows a large amount, it will cause a blockage. If you try to pull the string out of your cat’s throat, you will probably see a lot of blood on the string. If you see your cat swallowing a string, take him to your Vet ASAP, as they will know how to safely remove the string from your cat’s throat, stomach, or intestines. Never let your cat near paper clips or springs out of ballpoint pens, as these could cause tearing or ripping when swallowed; Christmas tree tinsel is also very dangerous, along with the treated water under your Christmas tree. Never let your cat near your houseplants; some are poisonous if your cat eats a leaf or flower. Tiger Lilies and tulips are poisonous if your cat eats them and other outdoor flowers.. Once, a woman was knitting and finally noticed her cat eating the yarn. Luckily, she took her cat to her Vet ASAP, as her cat’s stomach was full of yarn. Her Vet told her if she had not brought in her cat when she did, he would have been dead by morning.

Cleaning Supplies

Ensure you store your toilet bowl brush where your cat cannot lick it, as the chemicals in the brush could kill your cat. Do not leave paint brushes or rollers out because your cat might think the paint is an excellent drink. Never leave oil, antifreeze, and any other chemicals out. Make sure you have chemicals safely stored.

Do Not Let Your Cat Play With Any Wild Animals

Outdoor cats will let opossums, raccoons, and skunks share their food dish. One time, one of our outdoor cats fought with a skunk, and the skunk bit out a small area on her face. Luckily, she healed quickly and did not get rabies. Wild animals and house pets do not mix. Coyotes eat cats, and Bald Eagles will fly off with them and eat them later on. Always keep all your indoor pets in the house because you never know what kind of wild animal is outdoors that could kill or injure your cat badly.

Tom Cats

Some Tom cats that come to your property are friendly and well-mannered, while others will fight tooth and nail for their place on the totem pole. I had a tomcat come who tried to kill all three resident Toms. My Toms finally won, leaving them with a few battle scars. Some Toms are nasty to your female cats as they keep biting them, and your cat has blood all over its neck. Have a safe area where your resident cats can hide if an intruder, Tom Cat, enters your place.

Small Objects

We do not let small children play with small objects as they are a choking hazard. The same goes for your cats. Small objects can get lodged in the windpipe, and your cat could die instantly. Keep track of your medicine and vitamins, and if you drop one on the floor, keep looking for it until you find it, because if your cat finds it first, it will kill your cat. If your cat does swallow a human pill, call your Vet ASAP and tell them the name of the pill that your cat swallowed, and do precisely what your Vet tells you to do because time is of the essence. Keep dangerous objects and things away from your pets at all times. I hope you and your cats have many happy and healthy days ahead.

Cat Issues

Cat Issues

Now Is The Time To Take My Cat To The Vet

If your cat has been vomiting for over two days, it may be much more than the food not agreeing with them. Your cat could have throat cancer, a tooth infection, a growth in his throat, or another life-threatening illness. If your cat eats a poisonous plant, he may have trouble going to the bathroom or much drooling, possibly trouble walking. If your cat stops eating, this is a sign of a significant problem. Some cats will stop eating when they are close to death or if they have eaten something that is highly poisonous. One of my cats jumped off a countertop and landed wrong because my other cat was right where he wanted to land. Since he did not want to land on my other cat, he broke his leg when he landed. I first thought he had stabbed himself somehow with a table knife that was in my dishpan. He was screaming in pain, and I rushed him to my vet. My vet placed him on the floor, and he knew he had broken his leg. My vet gave him pain meds, and then he set his leg in a cast. It took my cat a long time to realize he could walk again.

 Fleas

If your cat keeps scratching himself repeatedly and shaking his head, he most likely has fleas and ear mites. Several treatments can kill the fleas. Ear mite medicine will take care of those pesky ear mites. If one of your cats has ear mites or fleas, all of the cats in your house will have them, and they will all have to be treated. You must wash all your bedding, clothes, and cat bedding and hire an exterminator to spray your home at least twice before you kill them off. You can get fleas from your cat, and you will itch like your cat.

Frostbite

I have seen several cats lose the tips of their ears over the years due to frostbite. If you live in the country or town and care for outdoor cats, ensure they have a shelter out of the wind and have heat. One woman told me she found a cat stuck to the cement by his paws because of ice. She took hot water and freed him from the cement, and he became one of her beloved house cats. I have noticed that some people dump their cats outdoors in the middle of the winter. I adopted two cats that had been placed outside in the winter. An older woman told me her neighbor had done this. I told her to turn her neighbor in for pet abuse. I wonder how they would like to be placed outdoors in the middle of the winter with no shelter.

My Cat’s Eyes Have A Discharge

If your cat’s eyes have discharge, they probably have other issues that may require antibiotics. Some kittens with feline distemper have a lot of discharge from their eyes.

Lethchargic Cat

If your cat does not have his old get-up-and-go and wants to sleep all the time, take him to the vet, as it could be a sign of health issues. If your cat is not acting normally, take him to your vet ASAP, as it could save your beloved feline friend’s life.

Cats And Medical Issues

Cats And Medical Issues

Cats That May Start To Stagger When They Walk

I have a cat that started to stagger when she walked. They cleaned out her ears and eyes. My vet ordered a complete blood workup for her. It came back with an elevated white blood cell count. She is now on antibiotics to see if that will clear up any issues. If she continues to stagger, my vet said she must have a brain tumor. A brain tumor will kill a cat in about four months. I hope she does not have a brain tumor, but if she does, I will do the humane thing and have her put to sleep for her benefit so she does not have to suffer.

Blindness In Cats

A head trauma or stroke can cause loss of vision in your generally older cat. I discovered that he was blind by the way he would land on me when he jumped up on my lap. He later would reach out his left paw to judge how far away an object was that he wished to land. I took him to my vet, and he said he was blind, but most cats adjust quickly to this disability. They told me never to move anything in my home, just as you would for a person who was blind. He finds his food dish, water bowl, and litter box without mishaps. He has adapted well to his blindness, thank goodness.

Cats And Cancer

I have had several cats that died from cancer over the years. Two of my older cats died from mastectic breast cancer that they fought for two years. One of my male cats died from lung cancer. One of my male cats died from mouth, nose, and throat cancer. I had an outdoor cat that had a mass in her ear. I had a female and a male cat that died from liver cancer. I had all of these cats put to sleep as I did not want to see them suffer.

Cats And Normal Medical Issues

Some cats have to have asthma inhalers to control their asthmatic attacks. Cats generally get respiratory infections now and then that need to be treated with antibiotics. Your cat may step on something or get an animal bite that needs to be treated by your veterinarian. Ear mites can be prevalent in cats, and you must treat every cat in your home to get rid of them. Indoor-outdoor cats can get fleas, and you will have to treat all of your cats and have your home treated by a pest control person. Cats should have a physical once a year and make sure all of their shots are current and up to date.

Cat Tail Surgery Or Broken Leg

I had one cat that landed wrong at 8 PM, and he had to be rushed to my vet and have his leg set in a cast. I had to do physical therapy with him to encourage him to walk on his leg. One day, I noticed a big lump on my young cat’s tail. My vet removed the mass as it was not cancerous, and his tail healed up quickly. God bless our cats and keep them happy and healthy for many years to come.

Cats And Fights

Cats And Fights

I Have Witnessed Cats Fighting With Various Kinds Of Animals Over The Years

Years ago, I had a female cat in a fit with a giant rat. The rat bit her on the face, and she healed up rather quickly. The worst fight was a female cat in a battle with a skunk as the skunk bit her face significantly. Luckily, I put salve on it, and it healed without too much of a scare. She had her rabies shots up to date since skunks are known to carry rabies. One of my house cats was in a fight with a bat. We installed new shingles on our house, and the bat got in that way. My cat was 15, but she wore out the bat, and I was able to get it outdoors. My poor cat was huffing and puffing toward the foot of my bed. One of my outdoor cats got in a fight with our dog. Our dog kept chasing him around the house, and then suddenly, he turned around midway and lunged at her nose with his claws fully extended. She never attacked any of our cats again.

Tom Cat Fights

Years ago, I had three Tom cat brothers who patrolled the farm. If a stray Tom dared show his face on our farm, the three brothers would gang up on him, and he would never return. One time, my housecat snuck out, and the three brothers went after him; luckily, he managed to wiggle himself deep into the bales of straw stored in that building, and he was delighted when I took him back into the house unscathed. Tom cat fights can be brutal as they bite the tips off their ears or leave terrible wounds or scares on each other.

Never Try To Separate Cats In A Fight

If you see outdoor cats fighting, don’t think you can separate them. You may be scratched or bitten and need to see your doctor for rabies shots. If you throw a bucket of water between them, one will run away, perhaps. Sometimes, if you have cat food, you can call them. They may forget about the fight and want to eat. If cats are in a battle for their territory, they will fight until one is the victor. Cats do not back down easily.

Female Cat Fights

One time, my purebred Siamese cat went outdoors and beat up one of my outdoor female cats. My Siamese was a nasty fighter, and I felt so sorry for my outdoor female cat. Siamese cats think they rule over all other cats. Female cats do not fight nearly as much as the males do. They fight mainly to ward off Toms and protect their kittens.

Treating Your Injured Cat

If the wound is not too bad and the rabies shots are up to date, you can put an ointment on it for cats, and it should heal up fine. If it is a deep wound, take your cat to your Vet ASAP. If it smells or looks terrible, seek the help of your Vet. I hope your cats do not get into any nasty catfights.

Cat Come Home

Cat Come Home

My New Cat Sneaked Out

You can be diligent, and your cat can still sneak past you and be out of your door. Cats are very determined creatures, and they aim to get their way one way or the other. If your cat sneaks out, do not panic. Your cat may not come back right away. Keep calling him. Sometimes, it may take up to three hours before he wishes to return to the comfort of his home. I had one cat that was gone for one week before she returned home. She had managed to get a large hole in the screen door and got out that way. To my surprise, I left the hole in the screen, and she was in the house one day after exploring her new area. I was elated to have her back home and safe again. The Siamese cat that I had years ago loved to go out and explore. It was going to rain one day while she was out, and I called and called, but she would not let me pick her up or would she enter the house. When I came home, she was wet, but it was 80 out, and she ran in the door the minute we opened it. My cat, Red, liked to go out and explore, and he would not let you catch him once he was out. One day, my three unneutered Toms saw him, and they tried to beat him up, but he hid in between bales of straw. After that ordeal, he was happy to let me put him back in the house. Put canned tuna in water in a trap, and you should be able to catch your missing cat if all else fails. I had a cat familiar with the sound of the lawn mower, so I drove it back and forth along the edge of the field. She came from the cornfield, and I returned her to the house.

Tom Cats And Female Cats

I have had many Tom cats take off for months during mating season. I always worried about them. Most of the time, they returned home with a few scratches. In the country, some people will shoot your Tom Cats if they set foot on their farm. Tom cats should not be shot unless they are brutal and mean to the female cats. We had a hunter years ago that killed our beautiful female cat right in front of my Father. She had kittens, but we gave them to another female cat with sickly and dying kittens. Her mother raised her healthy kittens. Some of my cats went to live with the neighbors after I had doctored them up. I guess they thought my Doctoring methods were torture even though I saved their lives with shots and pills. I had one cat that was gone for eight years before she returned home. She returned home to die as she only lived two months after her return. I hope your cat returns home safely and unharmed.

Surgery And Your Feline Friend

Surgery And Your Feline Friend

Preparation

Please do not feed your cat after dark, as they will most likely have scheduled surgery early in the morning. Sanitize the area that your cat will be recovering in. Talk gently and tell your cat everything will be okay on the ride to your Vet, as they know you are worried about something. Clean the bedding for your cat, and ensure the area is warm enough, as they will be very cold after surgery. Check on your cat often. Ensure the wound has not opened, and they are not trying to remove their stitches or staples.

Place Your Cat In An Area Where Your Other Cats Cannot Hurt Them.

Put your cat in your bathroom, as they should not move around too much for at least two weeks after surgery and two weeks after having the stitches or staples removed. Keep the area quiet, warm, and an area where they can get plenty of rest to make a full recovery. Check on your cat often.

Pain Killer

My Vet used an ointment that goes back on their shoulders like flea medication with a four-day painkiller. I was glad he used that, as trying to give pain pills to your cat every day for a few days can be very challenging. They try to fight it tooth and nail.

Place Your Cat In A Clean Bed

Lay them carefully in the bed. Please do not leave a heated bed plugged in the first night after surgery, as it might burn their skin since they will not be able to move around for a while after surgery. Do not feed your cat yet, and have a tiny water dish out so if your cat passes out, they will not drown in the water dish. Food is not advisable yet as they might choke to death on it as they will not be fully alert until the next day.

Surgical Suit For Cats

They come in various sizes and colors. If your cat is persistently licking or trying to remove stitches or staples, buy one of these suits if your Vet thinks it will work for your cat. They also make a cone that fits around your cat’s head, which might help.

Do Not Hesitate To Call Your Vet If Something Does Not Seem Right With Your Cat After Surgery

If the incision is bleeding or smells terrible, your cat may need antibiotics for an infection. The wound should heal without a horrible smell or a lot of bleeding. Too much blood loss could kill your cat quickly. Call your Vet after-hours number if any unforeseen issues arise, such as your cat not walking right, breathing right, eating, using the litter box, or anything out of the norm. God bless you and your cat after surgery. May you have many more Happy and Healthy years together. I hope your cat has a full and speedy recovery and is his old self again.

Why Did My Cat Urinate On That?

Why Did My Cat Urinate On That?

Medical Issues

Cats will start peeing in different areas of your home if they have medical issues. If you have an older cat, she may no longer be able to get up and down your steps. Put a litterbox out that is easy for her to find on the main floor of your home and is easy to get in and out of. A cat with a bladder infection or kidney failure will also be unable to make it to the litterbox on time. Do not yell or scream at your cat; she dislikes the situation as much as you do. Take your cat to your vet ASAP, as kidney failure can kill your cat quickly without medical help. Buy a ramp for your cat to get into the litterbox quickly. We have medical issues now and then, and so do our feline friends.

Clean Litterbox Issue

If you do not clean your litterbox daily, your cat will start to hate that smelly place and avoid it like the plague. If we go to a restroom and it is dirty and nasty, we look for a clean toilet in the following location we go to, and our feline friends feel the same way about it. You must have at least one litterbox for every two cats in your house, and they recommend one per cat plus one extra one. Cats will use a house plant to do their business if the litterbox is filthy.

Workers In Your Home

Cats get stressed when people they have never seen come into your home and start a remodeling project. They don’t understand what is going to be happening to them. Because they are stressed out, they may pee on the painter’s tarp that covers your floor. If he does not take it home at night, your cat may pee on your clothing or the carpenter’s paint gear.

New Furniture In Your Home

When putting new furniture in your home, put a pillow on it from the piece of furniture you get rid of. That way, it will have its old familiar smell, and they won’t pee on the new invader in their home.

New Person Living In Your Home Or New Pet

If a man gets a new roommate to move in with him, his cat may disapprove. His cat will most likely pee all over the intruder’s clothes. They think of the new person as an intruder in their territory, as if they were still living in the wild as their ancestors did. Cats are very territorial, and no one better step on their turf uninvited, or they will suffer some repercussions. A new pet in the house can be very upsetting because their territories are already established, and now they must determine where the newcomer will fit in.

Cats Hate Change

If you are moving and your cat sees you packing up things, he will be stressed out of his mind with worry. Packing your suitcase will be highly upsetting as they know you will leave them for a while. Cats have been known to pee on things in the suitcase if you leave the room, and that is their way of telling you they do not want to leave their territory as you are part of the pride. Try always to put yourself in your cat’s place, and then you will understand each other more clearly.

Sickly Cats

Sickly Cats

Runny Eyes

If your cat has runny or dirty eyes, they have some illness or disease that is causing that. It could be that another cat scratched them by their eye, or they have the human form of a cold. A healthy cat should have bright and clear eyes.

Sneezing

One of my cats keeps having sneezing fits, and they are allergic to pollen in the air and grass clippings. Some cats will sneeze if they are asthmatic or have an allergy or cold. If your cat keeps sneezing to the point of vomiting or can hardly breathe, take them to your local Vet ASAP.

Bad Hair Day

A cat’s hair will look mated and unkept when they are sick. Older cats are not agile enough to clean their rear very well, and the hair around their bottom might need a good cleaning by you. Try to brush out matted hair and bath cats that have dirty rears so they look, smell, and feel better.

Sleep All Day

If your cat is lethargic and wants to sleep constantly, they are not feeling well. If they do not perk up shortly, take them in for a complete checkup. Their diet may lack essential vitamins, minerals, and more. If your cat is tired all of the time, he may have a significant illness that is attacking his body. Take them to your Vet for a complete blood workup.

Vomiting Cat

Your cat may have eaten something wrong. Your cat may eat a poisonous plant or drink some toxic substance. Cats can vomit food if they eat it too fast. Some cats have trouble digesting their food and need special pills for that. Take your cat to your Vet if he vomits, as it is not normal unless he ate some spoiled food. He could be poisoned or have food poisoning from defective cat food.

Your Cat Starts Limping

Your cat may have been bitten in the leg by a wild animal or fallen off of something very high. Check your cat’s paw and see if you can spot a thorn or something in the pad that would cause him to limp. Your cat could have arthritis and need medicine to help alleviate his pain. Look your cat over and make sure he did not break his leg. If it broke, your cat had to get his leg set at your Vet.

Loss Of Weight Quickly

A sudden weight loss is a sign of a dangerous illness. My cat lost weight and was diagnosed with lung cancer in about six months. I had to have him put to sleep. I had another anemic cat that I had put to sleep. One of my cats had mouth, throat, and ear cancer, and I had to put him to sleep at 13.

Sudden Changes In Your Cats Behavior

Any sudden changes in how your cat acts typically cause concern and a visit to your Vet for a complete checkup and blood workup. I hope you and your cat have many blissful, healthy, and happy days ahead of you.

Wild Animals That Have Attacked My Cats

Wild Animals That Have Attacked My Cats

Bats

My cat Ginger, at age 16, managed to corner a bat that had gotten in my bedroom upstairs when we put a new roof on our house. The bat had landed on my head, and I was freaking out when Ginger came to the rescue. She got the bat on the floor, and she and the bat were exhausted. I caught the bat with tongs, and out he went. Poor Ginger lay at the foot of my bed panting until she was finely her old self again. God bless Ginger for saving me that day.

Rats

I had an older gray tabby female cat that had her face bitten by a rat. Her face looked very swollen. I put a salve on her face that I already had on hand. She had a piece of skin missing from her face, about one inch in diameter. She still had a good appetite. Her face was completely healed in about three months.

Skunks

I had a gray and white female cat that was quite the avid huntress. She would always come home with mice or moles that she had caught. One day our neighbor told my Father that he had seen our cat in a fight with a large skunk. She came home that evening with a bite on her face. I treated her face with wound powder that I always keep on hand. Luckily she had her rabies shot up to date. She healed up quite quickly from her fight with the skunk.

Cyst Full Of Hair

My tom cat Milford had a large swollen area on his face. The location on his face kept getting more significant. He was a very gentle cat. I took a surgical knife and cut the site open. The area on his face that I cut open had a lot of hair. I cleaned out the room with three percent hydrogen peroxide. He healed up very quickly. Do not try to use a surgical knife on any of your cats. You may be badly injured.

Raccoons

My Russian Blue cat Catrenia had her foot bitten by a raccoon. Her foot kept swelling. She was having trouble walking on her foot. I had put salve on her foot, but it did not help. I took her to my vet, who gave her an antibiotic shot. She made a full recovery.

Bats And Other Animals Carry Rabies

Remember always to have all of your cat’s shots up to date. A rabid animal could bite them at any time. You do not have to worry about them or you are getting rabies when all their shots are up to date.

Mean Tom cats

I have had mean Tom cats beat up my cats. They scared their face or bit them in the front. I once had three Toms related to each other, and stray Toms did not stand a chance against 3 Tom cats United.

I hope your cat never gets bitten by a wild animal. Make sure all of your cat’s shots are up to date.
