Ear Cancer

Ear Cancer

I had a beautiful Calico cat by the name of Champagne. Champagne was one of my outdoor cats. She was always an amiable and outgoing cat. She would follow me out to my garden. She would roll in the dirt while I planted my garden.

She and my dog Jitters were good friends and would go out hunting together. My goat Zachary would tag along with them. He would eat leftover corn in the field while they hunted for mice.

Champagne had many lovely kittens over the years. As a house cat, I took one of her tuxedo kittens into my house. I named him Sylvester. I had Sylvester for about one year. I let him outside briefly on one warm summer day. A wild animal came along and killed him. I missed him very much. I never let any indoor cats out after that happened.

I started to notice a growth in Champagne’s ear. I treated it with ear drops to no avail. The development kept getting more significant. She began to shake her head. When she would shake her head, blood would fly out of her ear.

I took her to my vet, who diagnosed her with ear cancer. He said she could live for another six months without pain. She seemed to get along reasonably well for at least five months. More and more blood would come out of her ear.

I did not want to see her suffer, so I had her put down. It is hard to watch a dear pet go downhill. She is now in heaven with all my other cats who have passed on. They have all crossed the rainbow pet bridge and entered pet heaven.

I  hope none of your cats ever get ear cancer.

Lung Cancer and Your Cat

Lung Cancer and Your Cat

My cat Sebastian died from lung cancer.

He was always a playful kitten. He was born on my farm. Sebastian was an outdoor kitten, to begin with. He would get under one’s feet as a kitten. He was brilliant about staying away from cars. The weather was getting colder, and he would meow by my back door. I gave in and let him in my house and decided to have three house cats.

On his first night in the house, he gathered up all of the toy mice and placed them in a neat, orderly row. I bathed him, and he enjoyed having a bath.

He was pretty healthy and would play with my other cats. He would walk along and balance on the narrowest part of the window. Sebastian was quite the athlete.

Sebastian started to get asthma, or at least that’s what I thought it was. He was about eleven years old a the time. My vet gave him some shots, which seemed to help. I noticed he seemed to be losing weight. I took him back to my vet. My vet took X – Rays and saw a large mass on one of his lungs.

Sebastian ate OK  and was not in pain. As time passed, his fur was r,d he would lay around more. One day he was resting on my steps and seemed in pain.

I called my vet and made an appointment to have Sebastian put to sleep. I had a burial box with me. I put some cat toys and a towel to cover him in the box. Sebastian lived to be thirteen years old.

I took him home and buried him. It was a sad day for me. I was heartbroken for some time.

One must never forget to do what is best for your pet. I do not want to see any beloved pet suffer in pain. You will miss your pet terribly but remember he is no longer in pain. Remember all of the fun times you had together.

Why Did My Mother Cat Abandon Her Kittens ?

Why Did My Mother Cat Abandon Her Kittens ?

A first-time mother cat may abandon her kittens because she has not yet learned how to care for them. Most of my cats have always cared for their kittens by the time they are two years old.

I have had a mother cats carry one kitten away. A mother cat will carry a sickly kitten away and abandon it to save the rest of her healthy litter of kittens. I have tried to put the kitten she has carried off back with the other kittens. Most of the time, the kitten that I put back has died.

A mother cat naturally knows if one of her kittens is sick and will not make it. I have had mother cats move all of their kittens except one kitten. They moved the healthy kittens to a different building with an area that had clean straws.

Mother cats may abandon all of their kittens if they are not feeling well. Your cat may not produce enough milk to feed her kittens.

If your mother cat gets frightened by strange people or wild animals entering the area where her kittens are, she may abandon them. Cats do not like any sudden changes in their environment or their surroundings. Try to keep strangers away from a mother cat and her kittens, as this may upset her terribly.

A mother cat always tries to care for her kittens to the best of her ability. She will naturally abandon one that is sickly. She does not want the disease that one kitten has to spread to her healthy kittens and kill them off by the disease entering their bodies. Mother cats are very protective of their young.

Next time you see a mother cat abandoning a kitten, you will know she has a good reason for doing so.

In Memory Of My Cat Bella

In Memory Of My Cat Bella

Bella was given to me by a friend. Bella was a nice and friendly cat. She did not want to be patted on the head. She liked to have her back rubbed. Snowflake and Bella were the best of friends, and now they are together again in heaven,

20150308_151120

Bella liked sleeping on a shelf with boxes with nice clean fluffy towels for her to sleep on. She would sleep in a heated cat bed next to Snowflake in winter. When Snowflake died, she slept by herself. Bella always greeted me in the morning with a warm and welcoming meow.

Bella lost three pounds suddenly. I took her to my vet, who ran a blood test that returned positive for liver cancer. I fed her tuna canned in water and got her weight up to 8.4 lbs. She had trouble swallowing and could not eat dry cat food any longer. I had Bella put to sleep at my vet’s office because I did not want her to suffer and get worse again suddenly. Bella was 11 years and ten months of age.

Bella loved cat snacks and treats and ate away at them. In her later years, she could not eat any snacks or treats, but she could eat a tablespoon of tuna in the morning and at night.

My cat Russ was always her knight in shining armor. If any younger cat picked on Bella, he would put them in their place. It seemed like Russ told them to respect their elders and toe the line.

Bella was a gray-striped cat with orange coloring throughout her hair. I am honored to have shared my life with Bella’s life. I will never forget her dearly and have a special place for her. My vet gave a memorial to Bella to help cure cats with similar diseases or ailments. God bless the beast and the children.

The Older Cat

The Older Cat

As your cat gets older, he will require more sleep. My older cats like to sleep in the warmest place possible in my house. They want to sleep next to heat runs and in heated cat beds.

All of my older cats still love to play with cat toys. Having a young cat in the house with your older cat will make your older cat more active. My older cats still rule my house. If they want to sit on my lap, they give my young house cat a gentle little nip on the rump, and my lap is theirs now.

20170120_075558

Some older cats get arthritis; your vet can give them some pills to lessen their pain. The older cat does not maneuver around as well as he used to. He might jump on top of something and knock things down now.

I have had several cats live to be eighteen years old. They were very limber up to about age seventeen. They would still chase rabbits and kill mice. One of my fifteen-year-old outdoor cats had one kitten on Dec. 1 . She managed to keep the kitten alive. She would sit on her kitten most of the day to keep him warm.

Older cats will not be able to groom themselves like they used to. The barbs on their tongues wear down with age. Help your older cat by brushing and combing out his hair; his coat will have that magnificent luster again. Remember, your older cat’s immune system is not what it used to be. Please make sure all of his shots are up to date, and remember to keep his annual checkups with your vet. You and your cat can enjoy each other’s company for many years. I hope you and your cat stay happy and healthy to a ripe old age.

Maintaining Your Cats Weight

Maintaining Your Cats Weight

Some cats eat much more than others do.

Do not leave the cat food out for your cat all day long if he seems to be putting on too much weight. Set up a schedule for your cat. Leave the cat food for thirty minutes in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Some cats exercise a lot, while others rest most of the day. My cats love to run up and down my steps. I keep my litter boxes in my basement. They get exercise when they have to use their litter box.

20151112_121252

Keep a toy box out with many different cat toys in it. You will be amazed at how often you notice him picking his favorite toy from the pack. Once in a while, he will play with something completely different. Buy a circle toy with a mouse or a ball in it. My cats exercise extensively by batting the mouse or hopping around.

20151227_112008

Play games with your cat. Throw a ball, and he will chase after it. Buy a laser light, watch him chase, and try to catch the light. I bought a remote control mouse, and my cat would run after it. Buy a stick with feathers on the end, and he will jump up and down to catch the feathers.

Scratching bench

A lot of cats are nighttime eaters. Take their food away entirely at night. Eating at night without exercise until morning will put on the extra pounds.

If nothing seems to help, your cat loses weight, buy weight-maintenance cat food. You can buy it at a pet store or from your vet.

A cat that is too heavy can develop many health problems. Being overweight can lead to premature death. I hope your cat maintains a healthy weight and stays fit and trimmed.

Spring Cleaning for Your cats Optimal Health

Spring Cleaning for Your Cats Optimal Health

Start your cat’s Spring with clean bedding, water bowls, food dishes, litter boxes, and more. I wash my cat’s bedding in hot soapy water with fabric softener. My cats love fresh fluffy clean bedding to sleep on. I clean out each food dish and water bowl and replace old plastic ones that are hard to get 100 % pure. I clean the litter boxes outdoors with dish pan soap and an excellent firm brush or replace them with new litter boxes.

20160106_124613

For farm cats, replace their old straw bedding with fresh straw or hay if that is all available now. Clean up their food and water bowls. Check their heated cat beds for cracks or other hazards and have a replacement bed on hand for next winter. Heated cat beds are on sale in the late spring and summer months.

Clean your house’s tile, vinyl floors, or carpet so you will not have to deal with fleas in your home and on your cats. I bathe some of my cats and brush and comb out their hair regularly. Change your litter often, as fleas are in dirty litter boxes and junk on your floors. Do not let your cats outdoors, as they can pick up fleas from being outdoors. Fleas can cause health problems for you and your cat. If your cat gets fleas regardless of all your precautions, take him to your vet to get treated ASAP. You will need an exterminator to come to your home to eliminate your flea infestation.

Take your cats to your vet to check their teeth, as bad teeth can cause many health problems. Get all of your cat’s vaccinations up to date. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ask your vet about flea and heartworm medicine for cats and a shot for feline leukemia. I hope you and your cats have a wonderful and healthy Spring.

Anxiety and Your Cat

Anxiety and Your Cat

My cats get overly anxious when I go on a vacation. My cats may stop eating or throw up what they have eaten. I put my suitcase out so my cats can look at it several days before I leave on my vacation. My cats can get used to the fact slowly by seeing my suitcase sitting out that I will be going soon. Cats do not like any changes whatsoever in their daily routine. I wear some of my clothing to sit out so my cats can curl up. Cats feel more at ease when they have something with your scent to sleep on or smell.

img_20150815_130542

Having a new kitten in the household will make your older cats anxious; make sure you spend much time with them so they do not feel left out or think you do not love them anymore. Give your cat some special cat treats or tuna canned in water, making them feel extra special.

20151112_121252

I have someone check on my cats every day on vacation. My cats are given fresh water every day for optimal health. Their food dishes are kept whole, and their litter boxes are cleaned daily. My cats have nice clean towels to sleep on while I am gone or my bed or heated cat beds.

IMG_1618

Cats like to play with catnip-filled mice and other cat toys while you are gone, which helps them relax. My cats like to bird watch through my picture window. Put something out to help your cat occupy his day while you are on vacation. I have plenty of cat toys in my cat’s open toy box for them to choose from so they will not get bored while I am gone.

A Stray Cat With Digestive Issues

A Stray Cat With Digestive Issues

A stray cat came to a friend’s house. She was very friendly, and she sat on their lap. She would gently rub across their legs. They gave her to me, and I named her Faith because I have Faith that she will get better. She could not keep any food down for about five days. She must have kept a small amount of the tuna and salmon I was feeding her. She had healthy-looking bowel movements. I was very concerned for her. My friends said that they would pay my vet bill. I took her to my vet to be tested for feline leukemia; luckily, that test returned negative. She also had a whole battery of blood tests. I have not yet received the test results since it takes one week to process them.

20161018_135407

I had been feeding her the same dry cat food my other cats eat. She was so thin and emaciated that her stomach could not digest foods right from lack of food over a long period. I went to a pet store, and they suggested feeding her grain-free cat food. Faith has been able to keep all of her food down now. Her grain-free cat food is free from dyes and preservatives, and her stomach can digest it without any trouble. My vet said to keep on feeding her grain-free cat food.

I am sure she used to be a house cat someone no longer wanted or could not afford to keep. My vet said she was one year old. I had guessed her age to be about six months old. Poor Faith had to fend for herself for who knows how long. Faith would have starved to death had it not been for people intervening. As good stewards, we are to care for all of God’s crGod’sre,s tremendous and trim. I have Faith that Faith’s blood test will be OK and that I can provide her the loving home she desperately needs. Always have Faith.

Faith has now recovered from her ordeal. She has gained weight and has not vomited for over a month. With Faith, all things are possible. Faith has to be only the size of a mustard seed but can have huge rewards. Never lose Faith that things will get better.

Cats and Accidents

Cats and Accidents

I have had many cats get run over by cars throughout the years. Most of the time, it has been young kittens. Kittens will sit on a car’s tires shortly after the vehicle has been driven. The tires on the vehicle are still warm, and the kitten thinks it has a warm area to take a long nap. I have also had cats sleep on the motor of a car.

We had a tenant run over four of our lovely kittens simultaneously. There was a kitten on each one of his tires. My Mother gathered the dead kittens, and my Father gave them a burial service.

An older or sickly cat will also sleep on tires or in the engine compartment of a car. The engine is warm, and they are cold from an illness. When someone starts the car, the unfortunate cat will suffer the consequences.

Several outdoor cats were run over shortly after I had them neutered. They got run over about three months after they were fixed. I never had another outdoor Tom sterilized again after that experience.

Manx cat

I had a Mother cat by the name of Trisha. Trisha was a perfect and intelligent Mother cat. All of the kittens Trisha had in her life never got run over. Before Trisha crossed to the other side of the road, she would look both ways at least three times and then cross over to the other side. Trisha taught all of her kittens her road-crossing skills.

I watched Elite, one of Trisha’s kittens, crossing the road. She used all of the skills of road crossing that her Mother had taught her.

Several generations later, I gave Trisha’s kittens to a friend who lives on a busy highway. I am glad to say they also have learned Great Grandma Trisha’s road-crossing skills.

Peter

I hope none of your cats ever get run over by a car.
