Cats On The Hunt

Hunting In The Ditches

I have had Cats stalk the ditches for hours. Most of the time, they were very successful and would catch a mouse or a vole. I had one Tom cat named Onyx who lived to be at least 18 years old. He would hunt the ditch in front of my place every morning, afternoon, and evening. He would catch several mice daily. He went blind in his old age but was still a successful mouser. I feed him canned food by the ditch during his golden years. I had a calico sit on a fence post for hours until a mouse emerged under cut grass. She made short work of the mouse and had an afternoon snack.

The Rabbit That Barely Got Away With Its Life

I had a Tortoiseshell calico cat named Trisha. She was an excellent Mother cat and an excellent huntress. In her old age, she wanted to eat a rather giant rabbit. She was on its tail for some time before she got utterly exhausted and had to give up on her rabbit stew, so to speak.

Cats And Birds

Some cats consider birds their friends if they grow up with birds in the house. Once, a friend’s cat came into my home and tried to kill my cat’s pet bird, as she had grown up with birds before I adopted her. My Siamese cat and her Siamese cat fought under a bed in my house, and did they ever fly? The other cat stayed away from the parakeet the rest of the afternoon. If your indoor cat gets outside and you have a bird feeder, chances are your sweet house cat will have a bird lunch. Always watch your cat. A bird may lose its life if you look the other way for a few seconds.

Skunk, Rat, And Cat Fight

One of my cats fought a skunk by the creek, and my neighbor happened to see the whole thing. The skunk ate a small hunk of my cat’s face. She made a full recovery, and thank goodness she had had a rabies shot. Cats catching rats can be dangerous for your cat as they will bite your cat on the face or body.

Garter Snakes

I had a beautiful calico cat named Blacknose. She loved to kill garter snakes and lay the deceased on our doorstep. I think she most likely killed at least 30 garter snakes in her lifetime. She figured snakes were a pest she must rid us of.

Cats And The Thrill Of The Hunt

Mother cats will train their kittens to be great hunters and huntresses if they are good hunters. A kitten not trained by its mother will not be a good hunter and will probably just let a mouse run right by them. Kittens play with the mouse for a long time until they kill it and eventually eat it. Mother cats are very patient when training their kittens, as the mouse will escape many times until they finally learn how to kill and eat the mouse. Cats never seem to give up on trying to kill the prey they are after. Excellent mousers come from mothers who teach their kittens every aspect of the hunt.

Catching Cats That Are very hard To Catch

Catching Cats That Are Very Hard To Catch

Catching Feral Cats

Trying To catch a feral cat can be very difficult. I generally put canned tuna in water at the back of the trip in a catch-and-release cage. Most of the time, I am lucky and catch a cat. I have caught two skunks and two opossums in the past since they also like tuna. Sometimes, I have caught them in a large fishing net and put them in a cage to take them to my vet and have them fixed and checked. Always have very thick mittens they cannot bite through for your safety.

Catching Any Cat

Catching a cat that does not want to be caught takes a lot of patience. Try to have someone help you catch your cat if you need to take him to the vet for a checkup and he is not keen on it. Have someone close the cage door when you have the cat ready to put in the cage, as some cats will leap right up in the air and be on their merry way. Sometimes, it takes at least four attempts to catch a cat with a large neck that you cannot hang onto well. Some cats will go into hiding when they see the cage come out. I have one cat that hides back in any area that is hard for me to get to. I move a few things, and then I can catch him in a fish net and get him in the cage safely. Never get mad at your cat just because he does not like cages. Your cat is afraid of the unknown and is trying to cope the best way he knows how.

Treats Back In The Cage

Some cats will run into the cage if they see their favorite kitty snacks or some fancy, moist cat food in the cage. You may also want to put some catnip in the cage to lure him into the cage. A new cat toy with catnip in it may do the trick.

Talk Calmy To Your Cat

They won’t be if you are not calm about catching your cat. I talk to my cats and reassure them everything will be fine. I pat them if they let me while trying to catch them. Make the catching process as comfortable as you [possibly can for your feline friends.

Putting Them In The Cage

Always put their back legs in first. If cats can see the cage, they will jump and fuss and probably bite or scratch you if they are not used to cages. Sometimes, you can put two cats in a large cage together, which will lure the other cat in if they are friends. Never put two cats in a cage that do not like each other as they will get hurt badly.

Sturdy Cage

Ensure you have a sturdy, well-made pet carrier that can withstand your cat’s weight. Some people have tried to take their cat to the vet with no cage, and their cat escaped, never to be seen again. Buy a pet carrier so your feline friend will be safe and secure. Good luck catching your cat or cats.

Life With Cats By Your Side

Life With Cats By Your Side

My Cats Followed Me Everywhere

My first cats were outdoor cats that followed me everywhere. If I played on my swingset, my cats would lie on the ground next to the swingset. When I rode my tricycle on the sidewalk, cats lined up along the sidewalk’s edge, or they would sit on my lap while I was on my trike. When I waited for the school bus in the morning, all my cats would stay with me until I got on the bus. I had a lovely bus driver who ensured he never ran over one wish, which was quite an accomplishment with eight cats to look out for. When I returned home from school, the cats would be lined up by the house door, waiting for the attention that they received. Some of them would follow my father, which was okay except for one time when he was moving grain. The curious cat jumped into the grain auger and went through fifty feet of lighting to end up in the wagon riding to the elevator and dumped in a pit. The cat leaped out before it ended up in the pit. The grain elevator attendant noticed, and he placed my cat back in the wagon. I am sure he told his kittens of the event that could have taken his life. We never had any more cats ever do that again.

Life With House Cats By Your Side

Cats love leading the way to the bathroom at night, which has generally worked out okay. One night, my black cat was sound asleep on the steps. I did not see him, so I stepped on him, lost my footing, and slid down the steps. Luckily, I did not break anything, and after that experience, I always turned on the light. You can be sound asleep to wake up to the sound of your cat vomiting, which is generally caused by a hairball or eating too fast. I get up and clean up the mess ASAP. Sometimes, your cat may see a mouse in the house, and he puts it in front of you to say look at the beautiful gift I have for you. It is the catch of the day just for you. You then have to throw it out the door or flush it down the toilet, but the thought counts. Cats try to please us in the best way that they know how.

Cats At Play

Watching your cat play with cat toys and have a grand old time is fun. Cats love catnip toys, circle ball toys, crinkle balls, singing birds, or squeaking toy mice. Once in a while, I will step on one of them at night, and the singing bird sings a song for me. Cats bring great joy into our lives, and it is very comforting to hear them purr away contentedly. Love and respect your feline friends forever, and always treat them as you would want to be treated if you were a cat. Cats have feelings, and they feel love, sorrow, and pain just as we do. I love it when my cats follow me and lie by my side. God bless our dear feline friends.

Cats Defending Territories

Cats Defending Their Territories

Cats Fighting

Cats will get into very aggressive fights to defend their territory. Cats have bitten an ear, put out an eye, severely bit the intruder, and in the worst of cases, one of them has died trying to defend its territory. If one male cat enters your property and you have several toms, all of them will take on the intruder, and he will not return. Sometimes, cats will have a growling and hissing match, and the one that runs away is the loser. Female cats will attack a Tom that is getting too close to their kittens, as some Tom cats will kill kittens even if they are their own. Sometimes, cats will have a fight with their claws spread out, and then they can end up bloody. They may get an infection and must be taken to your vet for antibiotics. Try to discourage your house cats from getting into fights by having plenty of food, water, and litter boxes. Have areas in your home where they can be by themselves and rest and relax. Do not treat one of your cats better than the rest, as they will notice your favoritism and take out their aggression on that cat.

Cats Peeing On Things

If another cat uses your cat bed, your cat might pee on it, so no one will ever want to sleep in that cat bed again. Cats figure if they cannot use their bed, they might as well ruin it for every cat in your home. If your cat pees on a cat bed, burn it, and do not buy a new one right away, or they will think I want a new one, so I will pee on the old one and have a new one in a few days. If a new cat comes into your home, your cat might start peeing on things to show his displeasure to the new cat in the household.

Tormenting The New Comer

I had a female cat that would not let my male cat use the litterbox. She figured he would have to pee on something in the house eventually, which he did. I did not scold him. I watched her and saw her not letting him into the basement to use the litterbox. I put her in the basement for a while, and she never tried that again. My older female cat knocked over my Christmas tree, and she had never done anything like that before, so I figured my new cat did it. One day, I saw her trying to knock it over again, and she knew the jig was up immediately. My older cats must have told my young cat to eat one of the gold birds on my Christmas tree. He de-winged it, lying on the ground with no wings. He looked humiliated, and my other cats were laughing at him more or less. Cats are constantly vying to be the top cat in your household.

Some Of My Cats Mouse Catching Techniques

Some Of My Cats Mouse Catching Techniques

The Pride Catch

Sometimes, my cats band together to catch that elusive mouse in the house. One of my cats will be in the middle of the piece of furniture, stove, or refrigerator they think the mouse is hiding under, and a cat on both ends. This method works out very well, as the mouse always gets caught. My cats will sit by the stove all night, and eventually, the hungry mouse runs right into the trap with the almond butter. Outdoor cats have routines similar to family groups, which will help catch the mouse. Outdoor cats play with the mouse before they go in for the kill.

Single Cat Mouse Hunting

My indoor cat Conrad prefers to drown them in his water dish. Cali will chase them into a trap or kill them and leave the head behind to show that she is earning her keep as a huntress. Garfunkel helps my other cats out, but he never learned mouse-hunting skills from his Mother, as he was given to me when he was very young. My outdoor cat Onyx, who died at age 18, caught many mice in the ditches by my house. I used to have a cat that would sleep in the bushes by my home in the summer months, and he could catch a lot of mice by doing that.

Mother Cats

Mother cats will generally teach their kittens how to catch and kill mice as it is a survival skill in the wild. Most Mother cats will catch and release the mouse in front of their kittens. They hope the kitten will eventually learn to kill the mouse and eat it for nutrition. Most young kittens play with the mouse, and then it gets away unless the Mother cat watches it constantly. They often repeat the mouse-hunting and killing skills until their kittens finally catch on. If the Mother cat is not a great huntress, the kittens will not be either.

If You Have Any Cracks In Your Home, A Mouse Will Get In Eventually

I caulked all of the cracks in my foundation and by my doors. Mice can run in your home when you open your door, coming and going. Mice can flatten down and get in the thinnest of cracks. I had a cat that loved to sleep with a small dog in her dog house that we had years ago. She could catch any mice that got next to my door, and the dog kept her and her cat family warm in the cold winter months. I keep mothballs in my vehicles as they do not like the smell of mothballs.

Cats Want To Please Their Human Family By Keeping Us Rodent Free

My cats are always on mouse patrol, even when I have not seen a mouse in my house all year. In frigid winters, mice will find a way to get into your home to stay cozy and warm. Never put out mouse poison when you have cats, as your cats may eat the poison and die. Let your hunters and huntresses keep your home rodent-free.

Cat Behavior

Cat Behavior

Your Cat May Get His Feelings, Hurt

If you do not give each of your cats the same amount of cat treats, they will gang up on the cat in your home that is getting the most goodies. Try to think how you would feel if your siblings got a big piece of Birthday cake and you only got a sliver. Sometimes you are the one that creates your cat’s bad behavior by not treating all of your cats alike. If you punish one of your cats and not the others for the same behavior, there will be animosity between them. If you buy cat toys, ensure each cat in your home has a new toy in about the same time frame. Groom all of your cats and not just one of them. Hold all of your cats, as the others will be watching. We do have favorite pets, but make time in your day for each pet.

Cat Fights

Males will fight to see who is the top Tom. Their fights can get very nasty and bloody quickly. Try to throw water on them to break up the battle if it is warm outdoors. Female cats fight with cats that try to harm or take their kittens away. I had three Toms that tried to beat up my neutered house cat. I managed to get him out of harm’s way quickly. Never leave your house cat outdoors unattended; another cat or wild animal may kill them. Cats are very territorial; if a newcomer gets on their turf, he better watch out. Tom cats have beaten up female cats badly, especially if they are newcomers that your resident Toms overlooked.

Toilet Paper And More

One day my toilet paper was all over the floor, full of teeth marks from one of my cats. I also found my toilet paper entirely off the roll all over the hallway. I was happy I did not have any company that day. My Siamese cat years ago was extra fussy with her litter box, and I guess she did not think it was clean enough to suit her. She started using my house plant for her litter box. I believe the house plant got replanted more than any other on Earth. House cats love jumping up high on things, and many things come tumbling down on the floor. I pick them up and arrange them differently to prevent recurring events.

Cats Get Jealous When You Pay Too Much Attention To Your Work To Suit Them

My purebred Siamese cat would always figure out how to get even with you. My Mother had papers on the couch, and Sugar bit the end of each piece of writing along with the entire edge of a new Atlas. Cats jump on bookwork, land on the floor, and start rearranging and putting your papers in the correct file again. Cats claw up your furniture to get your attention or start meowing or misbehaving while you talk to someone on the phone.

Cats And Their Everyday Routines

Cats And Their Everyday Routines

Cat Toys

I put all my cat toys away at the end of the day. Cali starts her morning by picking out the cat toys she wants to play with for the day. She picks out small stuffed animals and toys that have catnip in them. She loves to carry the smaller ones in her mouth and meow loudly. She wants you to see her catch of the day. Conrad likes the toy mice and will toss them around in the air for a long time. The singing birds get all of my cats very excited and worked up. Garfunkel likes to play with the toys my other two cats have set out for the day. Garfunkel will toss some of the toys up and act like a young kitten again’. Play with your cats one-on-one with a line with a bird or fish on the end. Your cat may learn to fetch with training and treats for a reward.

Medicine

My indoor cats let me give them their medicine without a fuss. Naturally, they do not like it, but they seem to understand that they must put up with it to improve. The outdoor cats that have been strays over the years that I have nursed back to health go to live with my neighbors once they get better. They think I am cruel and do not understand that I helped them back to health.

Cat Food

I give all of my cats the best cat food that I can afford to buy. I also occasionally give them top-quality soft cat food and tuna canned in water. My cats like chicken flavor, tuna, shrimp, chicken, and vegetables pouched or canned cat food. If your cat does not like what you give him, replace it with what he wants.

Lap Time

My cats delight in taking catnaps on my lap whenever I take time to rest and relax. Conrad and Garfunkel will lay side by side, purring away contentedly. Cali meows loudly, and my other two cats jump off, and she takes her turn on my lap.

Recliner, Cat Bed, Or Hammock Time

Conrad loves to sleep on his recliner or pet hammock. Cali sleeps on another recliner or in a heated cat bed. Garfunkel rests on my recliner or in the hallway on a cat bed. Cats know how to get the best set in the house.

Contented Cats

I want my cats to be contented. I want to make sure my cats are happy and healthy. A contented cat is comfortable and not afraid. Cats have to have things to entertain them to put them in a reasonable frame of mind. My cats have cat toys that stimulate their minds. I have several treat ball dispensers; the cat treat will not come out until they have masted the dispenser. Never have loud music in your home; it could ruin your cat’s hearing. Their hearing is way beyond our hearing as it is handy for catching prey or being prey to a coyote. I hope your feline friends are content in their nine cat lives with you.

Cats Don't Give Up Easily

Cats Don’t Give Up Easily

Cats That Want To Sleep In Your Bed

My cat Garfunkel will meow until I relent and let him sleep in the bed. He is spoiled, and I let him get what he wants. He will lay next to me and lick my face or cuddle up as close as he possibly can next to me. My cat Cali likes to sleep at the bottom of my bed, which works fine for us both. Conrad would lie down by my side and was quiet all night. Kohl used to sleep on my pillow above my head. Kohl would comb through my hair with his teeth. He was quite the hairdresser. Ginger used to sleep by my side at night. All cats behave and act differently if they sleep in your bed at night. Train your cat early as to where they are to sleep in your bed so you and your cat will have a relaxed and restful night.

Cats Will Keep Trying To Accomplish Something, And They Tend Never To Give Up

Jumping on top of something very high up is a great accomplishment for your cat. Your cat may have to make several perfect landing attempts, but he will get it nailed down pat. Some cats have knocked down and broken things before their landing skills are perfected to a science. One Mother cat kept running into a burning home to rescue her kittens. She got all of them out, but one kitten died, and she was severely burned. She and her serving kittens were adopted out to loving homes. My cat Kohl did a balancing act on a curtain rod as he grew older; the rod was too small to balance on anymore. My cat Trisha managed to chase down a rabbit at age 16, but she ran out of breath to take it down. Farm cats will stalk a mouse until they finally catch and devour it. Cats are very patient when it comes to stalking prey, and at the exact moment, they will pounce on it and kill it.

Cat Hierarchy

Cats soon let the other cats in your household know who the lead cat is. They may lick or rub against the head cat when they walk past them. Cat hierarchy is established through cat fights or body language that your cats understand. The head cat sleeps up as high as he can get to show off the fact that he is a head cat, along with a bird’s eye view of the great outdoors. The other cats in your home will groom him and bow down to him as if he were a King.

Your Cat Will Find A Way To Make You Do What They Want You To Do

Cats will sneak out of your house to get outdoors if they desire. Cats will lead you to the door if you want to go outdoors with them. Sometimes your cat may be trying to tell you of hidden dangers in your home. Several cats have led their owners to gas leaks in the yard that could have blown up your home if left unattended. Suppose your cat tries to get you to follow him as he could save your and your cat’s lives. If your cat is acting differently than usual, watch and observe his every move as he is trying to protect you from potential harm.

Your Cat May Rule You

Your Cat May Rule You

Your Cat Plops Down Right In Front Of You

This is particularly bad when your cat plops in front of you at night. If it is dark, you may step on your cat and harm it or yourself. One night my black cat Kohl laid down on my pie steps, and I stepped on his tail. He moved, and I slid on my butt halfway down my steps. Teach your cat to move if he plops in front of you, and do not try to maneuver around your cat in the dark.

Starring At The Food Or Water Dish

My cats will stare at the water dish until I put out fresh water for them, even though I put it out 4 hours ago. If they do not like the food you place in their dish, they will wait until you put in something they love, like tuna canned in water. Do not cater to every whim your cat may have. If they do not like a particular brand of food or it makes them sick, stop feeding that brand to them ASAP. Cats want to make you think they will die if their food dish gets a bit low.

Litter Box

Some of my cats want the litter box to be cleaned ASAP in the morning, and then they make a deposit the minute it is washed; I told one of my cats to go before I cleaned the box, but that did not work; it always leaves out the old litter box and the new one, or you may get a surprise that you do not want.

Your Cat Is Your Alarm Clock

Having your cat meowing outside your bedroom door at 4 in the morning isn’t enjoyable. Ignore your cat if they do that, and then they will soon stop doing that. Never talk to your cat when they wake you up; they will think yes, that worked well. One of my cats would wake me up at 6 AM every morning, which was terrific since that was the time I wanted to get up anyway.

Your Cat May Overtake Your Recliner

Every time I went to sit down in my recliner, it had a cat in it. I used to lift them and place them in my lap. I make my cats leave my recliner now, and then they can sit on my lap after I am situated. My cat Conrad took over my newest recliner, which was OK since it was not my favorite.

Cats Sleeping In Your Bed With You

I had one cat that would act like a hairdresser at night. I had another cat take over my pillow. One of my cats would sneeze right in my face at night. My cats no longer sleep in my bed anymore. They did a study that said people sleep more soundly without any pets in their beds at night. I would have to agree with that study. My cats were restless at night and would wake me up. Try not to let your cat rule you.
