Alpha Male Cats

Top Tom Cats

They tend to sit up high and look out of windows or sit on a post or anywhere with a high vantage point over their dominion. The top toms soon let all the other cats in your household know that they better tread lightly since they are the top-ranking cats. I have two top toms in my house next door. Winchester and Peter always look out the window to warn others of any danger, birds or squirrels they may see. When they see me coming over in the morning, they tell Faith, and she jumps up to look out. She tells the others while they remain on guard duty until I open the door and serve their food and fresh water.

Top Toms Keep Everyone In Line

They do not take any flack from any of the other cats whatsoever. Faith has claws, and everyone else is declawed. If she smacks Winchester, he returns the favor until she runs away. Cali used to live next door before she became a cat in my house. Cali would go after Winchester, and he would take it to begin with, and then he started to defend himself. Cali could not seem to help herself since she is part Siamese. She started losing weight and could not defend herself at all anymore, as her kidneys were not functioning well. I have given her treatment for her condition for four years now, and she is doing well with my mild-mannered males in my house.

Outdoor Top Toms

If they are brothers, they band together, and any strange Tom cat generally will run for his life when it is three against one. My male house cat once decided he must go outdoors and ran away from me. I heard a terrible commotion in one of the outdoor buildings. My resident toms had ganged up on him, but luckily, he hid in a tight area between hay bales. He never tried that again and was glad to return to my house with no drama or wounds. I generally had gentle outdoor toms that treated my female cats respectfully and did not harm them.

Top Toms As Housecats

Having two male cats and one female is OK in your home. Female cats tend not to get along well with other females, as there seems to be a rivalry about the top female cat. In my house next door, they seem to all get along; since I do not live there, there is no need to be the top cat to get my attention as far as sitting on my lap. Top toms work out fine as housecats if no female cat is trying to slap or start a fight with them. I prefer male housecats as they tend to put up with more and like to be held and petted. Some females leap off your lap immediately and will only be close to you when they feel like it. I have had several females who were excellent lap cats, but the males put up with more generally.

Cats And Medical Issues

Cats And Medical Issues

Cats That May Start To Stagger When They Walk

I have a cat that started to stagger when she walked. They cleaned out her ears and eyes. My vet ordered a complete blood workup for her. It came back with an elevated white blood cell count. She is now on antibiotics to see if that will clear up any issues. If she continues to stagger, my vet said she must have a brain tumor. A brain tumor will kill a cat in about four months. I hope she does not have a brain tumor, but if she does, I will do the humane thing and have her put to sleep for her benefit so she does not have to suffer.

Blindness In Cats

A head trauma or stroke can cause loss of vision in your generally older cat. I discovered that he was blind by the way he would land on me when he jumped up on my lap. He later would reach out his left paw to judge how far away an object was that he wished to land. I took him to my vet, and he said he was blind, but most cats adjust quickly to this disability. They told me never to move anything in my home, just as you would for a person who was blind. He finds his food dish, water bowl, and litter box without mishaps. He has adapted well to his blindness, thank goodness.

Cats And Cancer

I have had several cats that died from cancer over the years. Two of my older cats died from mastectic breast cancer that they fought for two years. One of my male cats died from lung cancer. One of my male cats died from mouth, nose, and throat cancer. I had an outdoor cat that had a mass in her ear. I had a female and a male cat that died from liver cancer. I had all of these cats put to sleep as I did not want to see them suffer.

Cats And Normal Medical Issues

Some cats have to have asthma inhalers to control their asthmatic attacks. Cats generally get respiratory infections now and then that need to be treated with antibiotics. Your cat may step on something or get an animal bite that needs to be treated by your veterinarian. Ear mites can be prevalent in cats, and you must treat every cat in your home to get rid of them. Indoor-outdoor cats can get fleas, and you will have to treat all of your cats and have your home treated by a pest control person. Cats should have a physical once a year and make sure all of their shots are current and up to date.

Cat Tail Surgery Or Broken Leg

I had one cat that landed wrong at 8 PM, and he had to be rushed to my vet and have his leg set in a cast. I had to do physical therapy with him to encourage him to walk on his leg. One day, I noticed a big lump on my young cat’s tail. My vet removed the mass as it was not cancerous, and his tail healed up quickly. God bless our cats and keep them happy and healthy for many years to come.

Cats And Their Cattitude

Cats And Their Cattitude

Winchester

Winchester has lots of cattitude. He thinks he reigns superior over the cats next door. Winchester fights with the other cats once in a while over food and who gets to sit by the door. Winchester always sits in my lap when I sit in my recliner. He can be very playful and very kind to my other cats. Once in a while, he gets very moody and tries to bite me when I pat him or pick him up if he has ventured outdoors. I love Winchester despite his cattitude. After all, we all have some attitude issues of our own. Winchester carries himself with a swagger as he is only five years old. He is very confident and sure of himself in the cat world.

Cali

Cali is part Siamese, and all Siamese have a lot of cattitude. She ensures she gets lots of attention when and where she wants it. She tries to get my male cats off of my lap, but I do not let her get by with that. Cali is 13.6 years old now and still doing well. She loves to be petted but does not care to be held for too long. Cali loves heated covered beds in the winter and lying next to the heat registers.

Faith

Faith detests having her claws trimmed, and she turns into a wild beast, where even my vet and his assistant can hardly trim them. Otherwise, she is a gentle cat. Once in a while, she will instigate a fight with another cat, generally over a toy, bed, or food. She loves to play with cat toys on a string. Faith is seven years old.

Sherlock

Sherlock was born in the house next door, but he still does not want me to hold him and hardly lets me pat him on his head. He likes to hide in the kitchen cupboard next door and is generally in a cat tunnel beside his father, Peter. He will always be shy. Sherlock is nine years old.

Mr. Gray

He wants attention 24/7 and makes his presence known often when I care for my cats. He is loving and very outgoing. He loves to play with toys and is very good to his parents and two brothers who live next door. Mr. Gray is nine years old.

Addi

Addi is ten years old and does not have any attitude issues. She gets along with everyone in perfect harmony, and she and her offspring are very close. Cali and her sons like to sleep in hearted cat beds in the winter months.

Hilford

He is an extra shy cat. He will let you pet him on his terms, is gentle, and would never try to bite you. Hilford has a beautiful cream color with a blue tinge to his eye color. He loves to play with toys and sleep in cat beds.

Peter

Peter is a beautiful part Maine Coon cat that was born on my farm. He is the father to Hilford, Sherlock, and Mr. Gray, as well as two other kittens I gave away to a loving home. Peter is timid but will let me catch him when it comes time for his checkups at the vet.

Tammy

Tammy was born on a farm from a cat whose offspring once belonged to me. She is six years old and does not care to be touched, as she was an outdoor cat before I adopted her. She gets along well with all of my other cats.

Tigress

Tigress is Tammy’s offspring. She used to let me pat and hold her, but now she would rather be left alone. She looks like a tuxedo silver tabby cat. Tigress is three years old. She loves cat towers and heated beds in the winter months.

Garfunkel

Garfunkel is a very mild and mellow cat. He tolerates a lot from any cat before he gets mad. If a cat tries to push him out of bed when sound asleep, he lets them know with a little bit of a growl. He is a lap cat and loves to be next to one. He has an excellent temperament. Garfunkel is twelve years old.

Conrad

Conrad was born on my farm. His Mother was Lizzie, and his Father was Onyx. Kohl was his half-brother. Conrad is timid but loves to sit on my lap with Garfunkel right next to him. Conrad is ten years old. He has sleek fur and loves to sleep in warm cat beds and on a recliner in the winter months.

Cats And Fights

Cats And Fights

I Have Witnessed Cats Fighting With Various Kinds Of Animals Over The Years

Years ago, I had a female cat in a fit with a giant rat. The rat bit her on the face, and she healed up rather quickly. The worst fight was a female cat in a battle with a skunk as the skunk bit her face significantly. Luckily, I put salve on it, and it healed without too much of a scare. She had her rabies shots up to date since skunks are known to carry rabies. One of my house cats was in a fight with a bat. We installed new shingles on our house, and the bat got in that way. My cat was 15, but she wore out the bat, and I was able to get it outdoors. My poor cat was huffing and puffing toward the foot of my bed. One of my outdoor cats got in a fight with our dog. Our dog kept chasing him around the house, and then suddenly, he turned around midway and lunged at her nose with his claws fully extended. She never attacked any of our cats again.

Tom Cat Fights

Years ago, I had three Tom cat brothers who patrolled the farm. If a stray Tom dared show his face on our farm, the three brothers would gang up on him, and he would never return. One time, my housecat snuck out, and the three brothers went after him; luckily, he managed to wiggle himself deep into the bales of straw stored in that building, and he was delighted when I took him back into the house unscathed. Tom cat fights can be brutal as they bite the tips off their ears or leave terrible wounds or scares on each other.

Never Try To Separate Cats In A Fight

If you see outdoor cats fighting, don’t think you can separate them. You may be scratched or bitten and need to see your doctor for rabies shots. If you throw a bucket of water between them, one will run away, perhaps. Sometimes, if you have cat food, you can call them. They may forget about the fight and want to eat. If cats are in a battle for their territory, they will fight until one is the victor. Cats do not back down easily.

Female Cat Fights

One time, my purebred Siamese cat went outdoors and beat up one of my outdoor female cats. My Siamese was a nasty fighter, and I felt so sorry for my outdoor female cat. Siamese cats think they rule over all other cats. Female cats do not fight nearly as much as the males do. They fight mainly to ward off Toms and protect their kittens.

Treating Your Injured Cat

If the wound is not too bad and the rabies shots are up to date, you can put an ointment on it for cats, and it should heal up fine. If it is a deep wound, take your cat to your Vet ASAP. If it smells or looks terrible, seek the help of your Vet. I hope your cats do not get into any nasty catfights.

Annoying Cat Behaviors

Annoying Cat Behaviors

You Sit In your Chair Talking On The Phone And Your Cat Gets Your Attention With Annoying Behavior

My cats may start knocking things over while I am talking on the phone, and that always gets my attention. Sometimes, I ignore them until I have to tell them to stop. If I am eating, they try to grab something off of my plate when they think I am totally engrossed in conversation. I generally place them on the ground, and they seem to understand that their behavior is unacceptable under any circumstance. Sometimes, Cali will rub her chin back and forth on the door so you can hear the door constantly banging against the wall. I tell her to stop it, and most of the time, she does. Sometimes, my cats start licking my hands or arms at night. I ask them to stop and move them over so they are not beside me. On several occasions, they wave in and out of the pictures placed on a bookcase, and I tell them to get down right now, and they seem to understand. Amazingly, my cats have only broken one of my items throughout the years, as they are very agile. If they have overeaten, they generally seem to get sick while I am talking on the phone, and I have to end the call early and start my cleaning session. God bless our cats, for we could not live without them by our side with their gentle purrs and mannerisms.

Cattitude

Cali seems to have more attitude than my other cats since she is part Siamese. Siamese tend to rule the roost and get their way, but when they do not, their cattitude shines through. I had a purebred Siamese years ago, and she would make life almost unbearable for my outdoor cats since she liked to go outdoors often. She let them know ASAP that she was the top cat on the farm and over any stray cat that may come also. My cats would run from her, and she would chase them and scare them to death if they did not. I loved her even though she had a cattitude to the MAX.

Let Me Show You My Catch Of The Day

If your indoor-outdoor cat happens to catch a mouse while he is out, he will make sure he brings his catch of the day back into your home. You probably will not notice until the rodent is running across your floor at night or if he places it in your bed or you happen to step on it on the floor on your bare feet at night. Some cats will eat the mouse except for the tail, so you know they were on mouse patrol and doing a great job of it. One of my outdoor cats used to lay garter snakes on our front porch that she had killed. Some cats will spend hours catching and eating annoying flies. Some cats love watching a bird in a cage and becoming friends with it; others see it as a gourmet dinner. God bless our cats on their catch of the day.

Cat Interactions

Cats Interactions

Cats And Other Animals

I have had cats become good friends with small rodents, dogs, birds, and a goat. One of my cats was friends with a small dog and a goat. They would go on hunting parties together. The goat would exit the group, go to the field, and eat any ear corn he might find that missed the combine. My cat and dog would hunt the ditches for mice. Our little dog would babysit my cat’s kittens that she had in the dog house. The group remained friends to the end of their days on Earth. I had an older Siamese cat raised with birds in the home from which I adopted her. She would listen to our pet parakeet singing to her every morning. She was very sad and depressed when he died as she would lie on the bed and look where he and his cage used to be. I have seen cats become friends with horses and chickens. One cat jumped on the horse’s back every morning for a short ride through the farmyard. A large chicken would leave her chicks with the cat, and the cat kept the chicks warm until the Mother hen returned.

Cats And A New Cat In Your Home

Cat introductions should be made slowly so the cats can get along. Put the new cat in your bathroom, where your cat can get used to the smell of the latest cat and vice versa. Put food, water, and a litterbox in your bathroom. Pat your cat very often and the new cat just slightly to prevent the nasty green monster jealousy. Give both cats cat treats, talk gently to both of them, and never yell or scream or use a loud tone of any kind, or they will become frightened of you and take out their frustration on each other. Make sure you have plenty of toys for both cats and several new toys that do not have your cat’s scent. Both of your cats should be able to live in perfect harmony if no one is ignored, both are loved, and their needs are attended to.

People In Your Home

If someone starts living in your home, your cat may not approve of them. Your cat may scratch them or urinate on their clothes to show its disapproval. Bring some of the person’s things into your home before you bring them into your home, and that way, your cat will feel comfortable with the new smell of that person in your home—none of us like surprises with no time for preparation. If someone came to your home for a meal on Sunday and you did not know about it, you would be upset because you may not have much food then. Your cat does not like sudden changes, as all cats hate any changes to their daily routines. All of us are creatures of habit, and sometimes things will not work because of another engagement or activity we must attend to. Cats will get along with people if given time to get to know them, and introductions are made when your cat feels chipper and up to par.

Cats Are Very Jealous Creatures Indeed

Cats Are Very Jealous Creatures Indeed

Why Are You Patting That Cat And Not Me?

If your cat feels left out or neglected, he will take it out on you or other cats in your household. Neutured Toms will hit each other with claws or pads or have a growling match, and the spoils go to the victor. Female cats may also fight with the neutered Toms. Family members will generally stick together and fight the cats that are not related to them. My housecats will vie to sit on my lap while I read or watch TV. Conrad may try nipping Garfunkel to get him to jump off my lap. Cali is clever as she is part Siamese. She will sneak in and get Conrad or Garfunkel off my lap without me noticing. They may nip at her after the fact, and then she looks at me with this sad look as if to say what those bad boys did to me, Mama?

Knocking Things Over Or Breaking Them

Your older cat may knock something over and break it, and then they stare at the youngest cat. They look at the youngest cat like don’t you have any manners or intelligence? Don’t you know that that is one of Mother’s priced possessions? Your other cats think to themselves that they will get that cat in big trouble. Mission accomplished, as we are Mother’s favorites again. The Christmas tree is always the favorite to knock over. The older cats know you will not blame them, and the newcomer will be scolded. All the more cat treats for us older cats, as we are Moma’s little angels.

Trying To Talk On The Phone

Sometimes, my cats wail and meow loudly while I am on the phone. They do not want me to pay attention to anything but them. They may act as if they are starving to death or going to break something if you do not give in to their whims. You keep telling them to stay quiet, and they carry on all the more. I have learned to ignore my cats when they misbehave, and now they behave much better. They figured bad attention was better than no attention at all before.

Getting Under Your Feet

Cats love to walk exactly where you want to walk. You tell them to get out of the way, or you may step on them, but they don’t care. After all, they do have your full attention now. Having a black cat that sleeps on your stairsteps at night is very dangerous. One night, one of my two black cats decided to sleep on the stairsteps. My feet slid out from under me when I stepped partway down on my black cat, and he moved simultaneously. I came down six steps and landed on my derriere. The cat and I lived to carry on another day, luckily. Cats love you and are very jealous, and they vie for your attention 24/7, like it or not. God bless our fine feline friends.

Catching Cats That Are very hard To Catch

Catching Cats That Are Very Hard To Catch

Catching Feral Cats

Trying To catch a feral cat can be very difficult. I generally put canned tuna in water at the back of the trip in a catch-and-release cage. Most of the time, I am lucky and catch a cat. I have caught two skunks and two opossums in the past since they also like tuna. Sometimes, I have caught them in a large fishing net and put them in a cage to take them to my vet and have them fixed and checked. Always have very thick mittens they cannot bite through for your safety.

Catching Any Cat

Catching a cat that does not want to be caught takes a lot of patience. Try to have someone help you catch your cat if you need to take him to the vet for a checkup and he is not keen on it. Have someone close the cage door when you have the cat ready to put in the cage, as some cats will leap right up in the air and be on their merry way. Sometimes, it takes at least four attempts to catch a cat with a large neck that you cannot hang onto well. Some cats will go into hiding when they see the cage come out. I have one cat that hides back in any area that is hard for me to get to. I move a few things, and then I can catch him in a fish net and get him in the cage safely. Never get mad at your cat just because he does not like cages. Your cat is afraid of the unknown and is trying to cope the best way he knows how.

Treats Back In The Cage

Some cats will run into the cage if they see their favorite kitty snacks or some fancy, moist cat food in the cage. You may also want to put some catnip in the cage to lure him into the cage. A new cat toy with catnip in it may do the trick.

Talk Calmy To Your Cat

They won’t be if you are not calm about catching your cat. I talk to my cats and reassure them everything will be fine. I pat them if they let me while trying to catch them. Make the catching process as comfortable as you [possibly can for your feline friends.

Putting Them In The Cage

Always put their back legs in first. If cats can see the cage, they will jump and fuss and probably bite or scratch you if they are not used to cages. Sometimes, you can put two cats in a large cage together, which will lure the other cat in if they are friends. Never put two cats in a cage that do not like each other as they will get hurt badly.

Sturdy Cage

Ensure you have a sturdy, well-made pet carrier that can withstand your cat’s weight. Some people have tried to take their cat to the vet with no cage, and their cat escaped, never to be seen again. Buy a pet carrier so your feline friend will be safe and secure. Good luck catching your cat or cats.

Cats And Territories

Cat And Territories

Tom Cats

Tom cats fight and bite each other to defend their territory. If an intruder comes into a family group of Tom cats, all family groups will ensure the intruder will never trespass again. They will beat up the young intruder to the point of misery with a bite or two out of his ears. Tom cats that do not know how to defend themselves will not last as long as outdoor cats. One time, my neutered cat Red slipped out of the house, and luckily, I was following him as I saw three of my Tom cat brothers chase him until Red hid in a section of hay bales. When I grabbed him out of the hay bales, he was ready to return to the house.

Cats Patrol Their Turf

My outdoor Toms would look in buildings and smell around to ensure no intruder had come onto the farm at night. Some of my Toms occasionally went to a neighbor’s house, but most returned home safely. By going to other farms, they could see if they had many Toms, look at the female cats, see if they had unfriendly dogs, and see if they wanted to return later.

Tom Cats And Female Cats And Putting Their Mark On Things

Tom’s cats will pee on trees or buildings to let other Toms know this territory is claimed and keep moving on. Sometimes, they will rub their chin on something as they have scent glands that other cats can smell quickly. Your house cat makes sure they rub the scent on your clothes to let other cats know that you are taken, and they better look for another owner as your cat has claimed you for himself. Cats will pee on a new person’s clothes that may come to live in your home. I knew someone who had just married, and her husband moved into her house. Her male cat peed all over his clothes as her cat was jealous that he was no longer the top male in the house. I had one female cat in my home for years, and I added another to my cat family that did not sit well at all with my female house cat as she started peeing on common everyday appliances. I had to find a new home for the newcomer, as the two female cats do not seem to get along very well. If female cats grow up together, they seem to get along fine.

Cats Sleeping In Your Bed Or A Place Of Their Own

My cats sleep in different sections of my bed. One sleeps by my side, one by my head, and another at my feet. Cats love to have lots of space to call their own. Sometimes, my cats want to sleep in a quiet, draft-free area where they will not be disturbed. Once in a while, my cat Conrad will sleep under a recliner that I do not use, in a heated cat bed, or by the heat register. Cali likes a heated bed occasionally, and Garfunkel loves to cuddle up on my lap while I am in my recliner or curl up in a ball in a cat bed.

Blindness In Cats

Blindness In Cats

It Is Very Sad When your Cat Goes Blind

You may not notice it until your cat does not land right when he jumps down from the back of your recliner. He may scratch you by accident when he lands wrong. Help your cat by helping him find leftover nibbles of food on his plate. Do not rearrange furniture in your home, as he knows where everything is. If you have to move something in your house temporarily, set it next to the edge of the other furniture. Never leave something in the middle of the room that he could stumble on and hurt by it. Tell your cat that he is close to the edge of a chair or hold him back so he will not fall to the ground and break a bone, perhaps. You will notice that your cat puts out one of his paws, which helps him know if he will land on your furniture or fall to the floor. Be patient with your cat and think, how would I get around if I went blind suddenly?

What Causes Blindness In Cats

Your cat could have high blood pressure, glaucoma, or maybe he had a stroke that left him blind. They might have damage to their optic nerve. A  bad case of cataracts could cause blindness. Blindness in older cats is common after the age of six. Take your cat to your vet to see if they can correct the condition, as there are eye drops for glaucoma in cats.

When We Had Outdoor Cats, We Had Two That Went Blind

They were both black Tom cats. One had short hair, and one had longhair. I had the short-haired one for many years, and he was very wild, so I could not catch him. He got cataracts in his old age, and he went blind. He hunted the ditches for many years and would bring home the mice he had killed in our ditches by the house. He died of natural causes up by our house. I gave him lots of canned food, and I would call him, and he found the food every single time. He lived to be twenty years old. The longhaired tom also lived a long life.

The Other Senses In Your Cat Grow Stronger

Their hearing gets more keen, and their sense of perception increases. Your cat will rely on his memory of where things are and some things you must bring into your home now and then because they have worn out. I have noticed that blind cats use their whiskers to tell them how close they are to something. They know something or someone is in their way if they touch their whiskers when maneuvering around.

Other Cats And Your Blind Cat

Hopefully, your other cats will be kind and helpful to your blind cat. I have noticed other cats touch their foot very gently on the blind cat’s face. If you have cats that pick on your blind cat, separate them immediately, as your blind cat has enough worries and concerns without another cat picking on him when he has a disability. Be patient, kind, and loving to the feline companion and soul mate that you have had in your life for many years. Your cat has always been there for you on difficult days. Help your cat as he has helped you on sad and difficult days. I hope you and your cat live together in harmony for many years.
