Things That Upset Cats

Things That Upset Cats

Moving Their Litterbox Or A Change In Cat Litter

I moved one of my cats’ litter boxes the other day because I had new floor tile installed. My cat did not like that, so she used the drain to do her business. I’m hoping that when the litter box gets put back in that room again, she will stop doing that. Cats have a favorite litter box, and if you replace it with a new one, they may not use the new one. It is a good idea to stick with the same size litter box, or add some catnip, which I did once, and all of my cats liked that litter box afterward. If you switch kitty litter, do it slowly. Gradually add a bit of the new litter to your old brand, and make the change over time. Everything should be fine then. Leave a litter box with your old brand of cat litter for your cat, just in case he doesn’t accept the change in kitty litter. Cats do not like perfumed cat litterers of any type. None of my 14 cats will have anything to do with perfumed cat litters.

A New Member To The Family Or A New House Guest

Cats will often run and hide from strangers, and if they leave any of their clothing out, they might use it as a makeshift litter box. Cats do not like a change in their routine whatsoever. A new family member of the human or feline world may not meet their approval, so they will rebel in some shape or form to let you know what they think of the new family member. Your cat may pee on his toys, so the new cat will not play with them. I have seen cats pee on a new cat bed if they think the new cat is using it. One cat kept urinating on a man’s girlfriend’s clothes because she disliked her. She perceived the woman taking her place in the household, and she would have none of that.

New Carpet, Remodeling, New Furniture And Appliances, And More

Cats do not like the smell of carpet glue or the scent of the new carpet after a while; they do get used to it. Remodeling truly gets them going as they see their home being torn apart and things being moved out of the way, with all kinds of workers coming and going. When you buy a new couch, place some of your old couch pillows on the new couch, and your cat will accept the change much better. Mt cats were upset when my old refrigerator left the house, and the new one entered. I think they were worried that the previous canned cat food was left in the old refrigerator. Never get rid of an absolute favorite cat toy that your cat takes with them everywhere, even if it is tattered and torn. You can try to replace it with one just like it, but some cats prefer their favorite old toy, just as kids do. Be patient with your cat, as none of us likes a lot of change in our everyday routines.

Coyotes And Pets And Humans

Cali And Garfunkel Had A Bad Night With The Coyotes, Making Noises

The coyote noise started at about 11:40 p.m. and finally stopped at 12:15 a.m. The coyotes sounded like mad cats before they started beating each other up with their claws and biting each other. Cali growled and leaped off my bed, and Garfunkel followed her. Garfunkel returned to bed and cuddled up as close as he could to me. All of us had a restless night with little sleep.

Coyotes And Cats, Dogs And Other Animals

My neighbors have told me that coyotes have killed some of their cats. One of my neighbors only had one cat alive, and she had him become a house cat. A friend’s daughter lives in Colorado, and their small dog got eaten by coyotes, and any of their cats that ventured out never returned. Coyotes kill off mice, chipmunks, and other things we may not want around our homes. Never leave a pet outdoors unattended. Buy a cage or cat playpen so they are somewhat protected if coyotes come about while your pet is outdoors. Coyotes can make all kinds of weird and scary sounds. I have not seen just a few rabbits on our place, as the coyotes must have killed most of them off.

Humans And Coyotes

All it takes is three coyotes to take down a person and kill you. Make sure you have something to ward off an attack while you are out walking or riding a bike. If a group of coyotes shows up, you can protect yourself from them. They are not called wily coyotes for no reason, as they are very clever and will sneak up behind you before they make their attack. I have seen coyote footprints in the dirt by my house, which look like a dog’s footprint. I have a trapper that got five coyotes in my area, three later on, and then five again. A trapper needs snow on the ground to track their movement so they can set out the traps on their regular runs. Every animal on earth has a purpose, and they are doing what coyotes must do to live. We must protect our pets, chickens, and ourselves to the best of our ability. Take care and always be aware of your surroundings. I saw three coyotes once while I was bicycling, so I turned around and kept looking behind me while I rode home. I hope you and your pets stay safe and free from harm from a gang of hungry coyotes.

How Cats Treat Each Other

How Cats Treat Each Other

There Will Always Be At Least One Alpha Cat in A Multi-Cat Household

Cali is the alpha female cat in my house, keeping my two male cats in line. She hisses at Milton every day. Milton may growl at her, but he does his best to ignore her when he ignores Cali; it irks her to no end. Cali is 14 years old, and Milton is only 15 months old. Cali wants to get into a fight with him, but he will not. Garfunkel gets along fine with Cali and Milton, and Cali likes Garfunkel. I do not think that Cali will ever like Milton for some reason of her own.

Cats That Grow Up Together

Cats that grow up together and are never separated form lifelong friendships. They will generally walk next to each other with their tails touching. Jasmine and Hanford are brothers and sisters who like sleeping in the same spot or area. They have been inseparable since birth. Addi is the mother of Hilford, Sherlock, and Mr. Gray next door. Hilford and Mr. Gray rub up against their mother daily as a sign of their love for her. Some of my older cats next door became babysitters for Addis’ kittens, and they bonded for life. Kittens that grow up together make perfect housecats since there will be no tension between them regarding who the top cat is. Cats that grow up together help each other out in life. My three Toms went after a Tom that came to the farm, and he never returned with my three Toms scaring him off. A mother cat and her kittens will remain close forever if left in the same household. Peter is the father of Hilford, Sherlock, and Mr. Gray, and he knows they are his kittens and will walk beside his sons.

Tomcat Fights

Tomcat fights can get very nasty in a hurry. Some of my Toms over the years have come home with scars all over their faces or maybe the tip of an ear missing after a brutal fight. Toms constantly fight for the right to the female cats on the property to pass their genes along to the next generation. Some Toms can be very gentle, but they generally do not fare well in all-out warfare.

Female Cat Fights

I had a Siamese female cat beat up one of my outdoor cats years ago, and believe me, you never want to fight a purebred Siamese cat if you are a domestic female cat. Female cats are very good at defending their kittens from Toms and other female cats. Luckily, I had one female cat that won a battle with a skunk. The skunk had bitten a small part of her skin off her face. Our neighbor witnessed the fight and said our female cat was a mighty warrior. Luckily, our cats had rabies shots since skunks are known to carry rabies.

My Cats Never Get Vicious With Each Other

My cats settle their disagreements calmly. They may hiss or growl, but nothing comes from that. My cats are very loving in their different, unique ways.

What Might Upset My New Housecat?

What Might Upset My New Housecat?

Old Cats Versus New Cat

Your old cats will make sure to let your new cat know that they are still in charge. They have various methods of doing this. They will ensure you are watching and make it look like the newcomer attacked them. They are good at swatting the newcomer, and when he swats them back, they look at you with loving eyes like, “Help me, mommy. That new cat is terrible, and you must give it back to its previous owners before we perish. The new cat must tread lightly to fit in with his new family. I had one of my housecats pounce on my young cat, and he did nothing as he did not want to get in trouble, and my cats were very pleased with themselves until the jig was up. My calico/Siamese cat pulled out all of the stops, and she would slap my young cat until he finally swatted back. Cali would swat and hiss at Milton until she realized that would not work for her. Milton was jealous of Garfunkel but soon realized he was a friendly cat.

Feeding Time

At first, one wanted to be served first, and then they realized that the older ones would be served first, and then the youngest. Milton loves cat treats, so keeping them apart for treats proved to be challenging. They soon figured out that their treats would be placed in their dishes, and that was all the treats each cat would get that evening. Cats want to be treated fairly; if you have favorites, your others will notice and feel bad or left out. Make sure you give your new cat the kind of food he is used to eating to avoid digestive issues, and gradually include your food next to his brand of food.

Ensure Your Young Cat Has A Familiar Toy Or Towel. Etc.

A familiar scent around will make your new feline companion’s transition to your home more bearable. Anyone is scared when they are in uncharted territory, and so is your feline friend. Make sure your new bundle of fur has a nice cozy place to sleep where he can be alone if he chooses to. Buy some catnip toys for your young cat and other things that will stimulate him.

Cat Litterbox

Please ensure each cat in your home has its own litterbox. This will reduce accidents, as one cat may not let the others enter their litterbox. Some cats will sit in a doorway trying to block your young cat from getting to any litterbox. Your older cats will then meow and bring you to the area where the newcomer had the accident as if to say Look at that, do you want that creature in your home? Cats are very clever creatures; you must always be one step ahead. Cat rivalry and hierarchy will continue, but you will be in charge of the situation if you think beforehand about what your cat will do.

Cats That Vomit

Cats That Vomit

A Cat That Eats Too Fast

Some cats eat way too fast. They hardly take any time to chew their food; they swallow it whole. I have seen a cat eat a lot of moist cat food and then suddenly vomit. Sometimes, a cat will eat fast if it thinks another cat or animal may come along soon and finish off their food. It is also suitable for an outdoor cat to finish its food quickly, or a predator may come along and find the food. The predator could then see your cat if the cat slept in an area close to the food bowls. Young kittens eat fast to ensure they get enough before one of their siblings finishes the bowl of cat treats. Certain cat foods will spoil if left out too long. As your cat’s caregiver, throw chicken pieces out sitting in your cat’s bowl for two hours.

Anxious And Nervous Cats

Anxious and nervous cats will eat quickly, as they want to be away from other cats or animals because they might feel threatened around them. Cats do not like a change of any kind. I bought a new recliner for our home, and the cats in our house got upset because of the change. Several of them threw up the minute the recliner entered the Living Room. New carpeting or flooring can upset them. Your new pet-proof and stain-proof carpet will most likely get tested out the day after or the next day after it has been installed.

Strangers In Your Home

If someone comes to visit you that your cats have not seen before, they will most likely run and hide under something, as they will then feel safe and protected. If your cat has just eaten before the stranger comes, he may throw up. Some cats may throw up on a chair to show their disapproval of the new chair as it has a new smell and none of their scent. It is best to lay an armrest cover from the old recliner on the new one, and then your cats will think the new one is not so bad after all.

Vomiting Can Be A Sign That Your Cat Is Sick

Cats with bad teeth will throw up, and kidney issues, liver issues, cancer, and more can cause your cat to vomit. You may have to switch to a different kind of cat food that is easier for them to digest. Your cat could have a swallowing problem and issues where they can no longer digest their food correctly. Never punish your cat for throwing up; I have heard of people putting their cat’s head down in the vomit. How would you like it if someone did that to you after you threw up? I can guarantee you would not like it one little bit. If your cat continues to throw up regularly, take him to your vet ASAP, as it could be a matter of life or death for your feline friend.

Cats And Other Pets

Cats And Other Pets

My Cat, Dog, And Goat

Our cat became best friends with our small dog, a miniature lab, rat terrier, and dash hound. She even had her kittens in the dog house. Jitters would babysit the kittens and care for them when Tabatha hunted for mice in our ditch. Even when the kittens were fully grown, they still lived cozily in the dog house with our dog. They formed a hunting party. One time, Jitters caught the mouse, and Tabatha got it away from her as she wanted that mouse so she could teach her kittens how to catch and kill a mouse. One of her kittens let go of the mouse, and Jitters ate it up, and we saw the tail disappear down her throat. It was interesting to watch the cats and the kittens, followed by our dog, coming out of the dog house every morning. Jitters and the cats would share the table scraps, but they each had their own types of dry food. As time passed, I got a pet miniature goat named Zachary. I put him in a building with two cats for a month when I first got him. He loved the cats and our dog Jitters. They would run up and down the deck chasing each other, and Zach would jump up on the windowsill and watch us eat breakfast in the morning. The trio formed a hunting party. Jitters and Tabatha caught mice, and Zach ate the leftover corn that the combine did not pick up. One day, they wandered away from home, and a woman herded Zach and Jitters back to our place. Tabatha returned on her own, as you cannot herd a cat.

Sugar, The Siamese Cat, And Perry The Parakeet

I adopted Sugar when she was 8 years old, and she became very good friends with Perry, our Parakeet. She was used to birds, as the party I got her from once had birds in their home. She would lie on the bed in the bedroom where we kept Perry, listen to him sing, and then leave and do her own thing. One time, another cat came over and intended that perhaps Perry was her lunch. Sugar laid into her, and the fur did fly, so to speak. Sugar was devastated when Perry died, and she enjoyed his singing and having the company of another pet in the house.

Pets Can Get Along With Most Other Pets If Introduced Properly

I had one cat that liked mice, as I had adopted him from a Vet. The Vet could not have a cat that would perhaps eat a person’s pet mouse in the office. I had an outdoor cat that was now a house cat, and she had a Bluejay in her mouth. I  told her to drop it now, and she did, and the bird was safe and unscathed. Introduce your pets when they are very young to any other type of animal you may want them to get along with in the future, and they should be able to live in perfect harmony then. Introduce them slowly, let them smell each other, and say a firm no if you do not like a particular behavior.

Problems That Can Arise After Adding A new Cat to Your Household

Problems That Can Arise After Adding A New Cat To Your Household

Cats Are Territorial Creatures

Adding a new cat to your household can cause significant stress to your resident cats. Your cat wants to remain in charge, and if he sees the newcomer as a great treat, he may stop eating or using the litterbox. Most cats should overcome these factors after one month; if not, take your cat to your vet to rule out serious health issues. Some cats will vomit what they eat because they are so stressed out that the new cat may take their position in your home. Cats are genuinely very jealous creatures, and it is more than they can bear to see you give out love to a new cat. Your cats may have hissing and growling matches to make the others think I am big and strong, and you better not tread on me.

Your Cats May Become More Aloof

Your new cat or resident cats may hide more and not want to be as close to you as they once were because they feel betrayed or left out. Your cats might start sleeping under furniture and not on your bed like they used to. Lavish more love on your resident cats and pat your new cat when they are not watching. Never stop treating your cats like you used to before the new cat entered your home. Your cats may stop coming when you place food out for them. If your cat seems afraid to eat, stay next to your cat while you feed him to reassure him he will not be harmed by the new cat while eating.

Time To Start Training Your New Cat

When I see my new cat jump on the countertop or table, I say no, no, get down, and he will right away. Be consistent in what you want your cat to do so he does not get mixed signals from you. Do not be wishy-washy and say, “Oh, isn’t that cute?” if you see them on the table, and then the next minute, you say no, get down from there. Even human children have to have consistent boundaries set. If your cat refuses to use the litterbox, remember if you have three cats, you should have three litterboxes out. We do not like dirty toilets, and our cats do not like litterboxes. Never hit or slap a cat, as that is animal cruelty and is not acceptable in any circumstances. Be kind and loving, as it takes time to learn something new. Learning something new takes us longer than usual if we are stressed, worried, and upset. Be kind and loving with your new feline friend, and be committed to your cat forever.

Hopefully, Your Cats Have Accepted Each Other

I hope your cats see that you love them equally and that there are no favorites. If your cats do not eat like they used to or refuse to accept the new cat, you may want to move him to an entirely different area of your home, away from your resident cats. If he is aggressive toward them, you may want to rehome him. A friend may care for and love your new cat if he is sweet and loving. If cats are introduced correctly, they usually form close friendships and live in perfect harmony.

Finicky Cat Problems

Finicky Cat Problems

Cat Food And Finicky Cats

If you try to switch cat food on a finicky cat, they will most likely reject it in hopes that you will return to their old familiar brand of cat food. If you are trying to switch brands, have a bowl of their familiar cat food with the new brand next to it. You can try mixing the two brands and see if they will accept the latest cat food that way. If they start to vomit the new cat food up, it does not agree with their digestive system, so try a different brand and see if that works better. I always stick with the same brand of cat food, which usually agrees better with their system. Try to stick with the same brand of cat food if possible. Sometimes, they may stop making a brand, and you must have a backup plan.

Some Cats Are Finicky As To How They React Around People

Some cats do not wish to be held or touched, and others want to be held, and they love everyone who comes to your home. My cat Kohl was a people-person cat; he loved to be touched and had a laid-back personality. Some cats do not even want their owner to touch them, even though you have been around them since birth. If a kittens parent were skittish around people, their kittens would likely also be that way. Some of my cats have had a friendly mother and a father who was not a people cat. The kittens they had were friendly but on their terms. Feral cats never seem to warm up to people 100%, probably because some of them were abandoned by owners that they thought loved them but hurt or harmed them, and the trust issue remains regarding all human interactions.

Cat Carrier Problems

Most cats do not care to be put in a pet carrier. A good way to put them in is to put the back end in first, as it is not as scary for them that way. Some cats will cling to the carrier with their claws, and you have to release their claws before you can get them into the carrier safely. Some cats might rub the fur off their nose while in the carrier. If your cat is getting harmed in your carrier, buy a soft-sided carrier that will prevent them from rubbing off the fur from their nose. Finicky cats are scared to death of cat carriers. I have found that putting some catnip or treats in the carrier helps get them into the carrier safely.

Finicky Cats And Other Cats

If you bring another cat into your home, a finicky cat may start peeing on things in your house. Some cats do not want to share the attention you give to them with anyone or anything. There might be fighting matches, and your cat might ban the newcomer from getting close to you. Litterbox issues can arise quickly with a new cat in the house. Your cat may break something when your new cat is sitting there next to the object, so your new cat will get blamed for the broken item. Introduce cats slowly to each other as friendships are not formed overnight. Be patient and understanding with your finicky feline friend.

Cats Have A vast Array Of Personalities

Cats Have A Vast Array Of Personalities

The Calm, Cool And Collected Cat

My cat Kohl was always calm and cool. He was even-tempered and had a pleasing personality. He was never moody, and he loved anyone who would come to our house. He would greet the visitor and wait for them to take notice of them, and after he got their attention, he would wait for them to pat him or hold him. He got along fine with any cat and never fought with them. My cat Garfunkel is like that most of the time unless one of my cats nips at him, and then he will return the favor. Addi, one of my next-door cats, never lets any cat upset her as she gets along well with everyone. If your cat’s parents were calm, cool, and collected, most likely, the kittens would also be unless they were feral at some point in their lives.

The Touch Me Not Cats

I have had some of my cats next door for over ten years, and they still do not like to be touched or held. Their father was an outdoor Tom, and their mother was standoffish until she turned 14 and was very loving. It takes quite a while for a feral cat to trust you. Once they do, they are very affectionate cats. You have no idea of what your feral cat may have gone through in their life, as perhaps their owner dumped them or mistreated them. Be very patient and understanding with them. Some cats will not want to be held unless it is on their terms.

Moody Cats

I have had cats be very loving one minute, and the next minute, they will jump up and try to bite me. I think it is because they wanted outdoors, wanted something that they were not receiving, or were just plain jealous of the other cats in the household. I have had moody males and female cats, but on the whole, the females are more moody. It never works to have two alpha female cats in the same household, as they will not let one overpower the other without a lot of hissy fits. It will end up with one of them keeping the other female cat away from you with very well-planned tactics on their part. One cat may break something, but they ensure the other cat stands by the broken object. One day, I caught them in the act, and the cat causing the trouble looked at me like you’re not supposed to see this because I am a little angel.

Timid Cats

Some of my cats are very timid. When they are around me, they may come out or hide. If someone comes to visit, they will hide on top of a cupboard or stay in a heated cat building in the house, etc.

Power Hungry Cats

Winchester and Peter rule the house next door. They stand on guard duty by a window and put Faith in charge when they want to get down for a while. Winchester convinced Faith to rip open a cat treat bag with her claws. After she had done this, he tried to eat, all while I was not looking. I love all of my cats regardless of their personalities. Life would be boring if we all had the same personality type.

Training Your Feral Cat

Training Your Feral Cat

Be Patient With Your New Feral Cat

Some feral cats have been tamed and reverted to the wild because a previous owner mistreated them. If your family deserted you, it would take a while to trust anyone again. Some feral cats are born that way because their mother and father are feral cats. Feral cats must depend on what they can catch for food or on good people who feed them. It will take a feral cat a long time to trust you and warm up to you. Feed your new feral cat foods they like, talk to them gently, and interact with them daily. Your new feral cat or cats will probably bite or nip at you, to begin with, as they wonder what is in store for them in a new home. If we were taken to a strange place in a room full of strangers, we would probably not sleep all night and be very apprehensive. Your feral cat feels precisely that way.

Place Your Feral Cats In A Room That Can Be Closed Off

If you give them the full range of your home, they will be scared and hide, and they will remain feral as they have not had time to bond with you. If you keep them in one room, you can bond with them by feeding them and playing cat games, such as having a fish or bird on the end of a string they can go after. Have a litterbox in the room with easy access, a food dish, and a water bowl. Your feral cat may not use the litterbox, but with patience, he will. Never place your cat’s head in an accident, as that is just mean and cruel. Even as humans, we may have an accident on occasion. Make sure you have a cat bed or hammock in the room for them to curl up and feel safe. If you have another cat, they will be able to smell the newcomers under the door, and they will get used to each other this way without any bloodshed. After two weeks have passed, I let the newcomers mingle with my other cats under my supervision to begin with. Once I see that everything is Ok, they get to stay with the rest of my cats.

Cat Food And Cat Treats

Your ferals will get tame quicker if you feed them cat treats they love, and you talk to them gently and never yell at them. If your cat does not like a specific brand of cat food, do not try to make them eat it. A cat will most likely starve before it eats food that it does not like. When switching cat food brands, always make sure the tried and true brand is still available for them to eat. Most pets learn rather quickly not to bite the hand that feeds them.

Talk Gently And Lovingly To Your Once Feral Cat That Is Now Tame

By now, you and your feral cat or cats should have warmed up to each other, and you will have a loving and wonderful pet cat for many years to come. God bless you for saving a cat’s life and giving him a second lease on life.
