Consistency is the key to training your cat. When you tell your cat no, it should be in a firm voice.
Do not let your cat jump on your table one day and the next day think oh well, I don’t care. Your cat will get mixed signals quickly. I like to hit my newspaper on the area they should not be on. The newspaper makes a loud noise that they do not like. They will remember hearing that noise again if they do not stay down.
My Grandmother would swat a fly swatter on a table to discourage her cat’s lousy behavior. I would not encourage that method, however. When you want to kill a fly, your cat will wonder what you did wrong.
TI has put perfume on a cotton ball and placed it on my table to stay off the furniture. Ensure your furniture’s color fastness before placing the scented cotton ball on your furniture. Cats do not like the smell of perfume and stay off your table.
Another way of making cats behave is to bang a couple of pots and pans’ lids together. They will not want to hear that noise again.
If my cat makes a mess on the carpet, I show them the area and say no. Do not put your cat’s face in a lot. That is cruel and unnecessary punishment.
Always reward your cat with a healthy cat treat after their excellent behavior. Never give your cat a treat for bad behavior. Your cat will think if I scratch up the couch, I will get a lovely cat treat.
I have tried placing aluminum foil on household items to keep my cats off. Aluminum foil has not proven effective with my cats whatsoever.
Cats are pretty intelligent creatures and catch on quickly. Reward your cat’s good behavior by playing a game with him. Have a stick with feathers on the end that he can bat around and play with. You can toss a ball back and forth with your cat that he will chase after. Always praise and pat and hold your cat when he remembers what you have taught him.
I hope you and your cat live in perfect harmony for many years.
