Cats And Some Of Their Habits

Stalking Prey

They will sit still on a fence post for hours outdoors until a mouse comes along. Cats wait for the right moment to pounce on their prey and kill it. I have seen cats stalk prey on their haunches, moving forward slowly and stealthily, then delivering the killing bite. I had an older cat that followed a rabbit for hours before she took off running after it. She almost caught it, but she got exhausted and couldn’t catch it. Kittens start by jumping and leaping on each other, chasing leaves, and pouncing.

Cats Can Get Set In Their Routines

Most of my cats wake up at 6 AM, and they expect me to get up and feed them, which I do. My cat Milton sits by the window every morning and watches the birds at the bird feeders; then he naps in his cat hammock or bats his ball around in the circle cat toy. Garfunkel sits in my lap every morning while I eat my breakfast or drink a cup of coffee. Cali walks around the top of my head every morning to make sure I am still alive, then purrs when she hears my breathing. My cats know exactly when they will be fed, and if I am running behind schedule, they make a fuss until they get fed.

Cats Love To Groom Each Other

Cats form a stronger bond by grooming each other. If Garfunkel grooms Cali, he expects her to return the favor, which she does most of the time, but since she is part Siamese, she may not. My cats in the other house groom each other a lot. I have noticed that the more related they are, the more they groom each other. Winchester likes Tigress, and he grooms her to show her he likes her. Mother cats groom their kittens often, which puts their scent on them and teaches them to groom themselves as they get older.

Cats Put Their Scent On Things

Tom cats will spray their scent on trees and other things in their territory to ward off wayward Toms. Cats put their scent on their toys so other cats in the house will hopefully leave them alone. Cats can be annoying when they spray new cat beds with their scent, and then you have to burn the new bed. I don’t buy another bed for some time after that, and then they finally get a new one again, which seems to work. Cats rub against your clothing to warn other cats that you are already taken as a cat owner and that they lay claim to you.

Cats May Have A Stash Of Hidden Toys, Etc.

One lady had a tomcat that traveled from neighbor to neighbor, gathering up their socks and underwear that he managed to grab off of their clothesline. She put a video cam on him, and that is how she found out. She put up an ad in her neighborhood asking neighbors with missing socks, etc., to look in the box outside on her porch. One woman found a stash of toy mice that her cat had hidden under her grandfather’s clock. We love our cats and all of their odd or peculiar habits.
