Working Cats

There is a local grain elevator in my area that has several cats. Their cats are working cats. When the Semi trucks are unloaded at the elevator, mice will run out of the grain carts. Their cats are expected to kill the mice for their room and board. Their cats have been excellently keeping the grain and the elevator rodent-free. The cats patrol the elevator 24/7  for mice and rats. When the elevator is closed at night, the cats can get in where their feed is stored and keep it rodent-free. Their cats are provided cat food, which the elevator sells, and freshwater every day. The cats help them, and they help their cats by providing room and board for them.

I have known a man who owned an Implement Co. since I was twelve. A young black Tom cat wandered into his Implement workshop one day. They feed the young black cat, and he seems to like living at the Implement Co., Their black cat is free to come and go as he chooses, but he stays in their workshop most of the time. Combines go into the workshop that has mice hiding in them. When the workers start the combine, all kinds of mice run away from the combine, and their workshop black Tom comes to their rescue. He kills the mice quickly and efficiently. The Implement owner told me no rodents have ever escaped their resident Tomcat. Tom patrols the sales area of their business also. He is a friendly cat and loves to be patted on his head. I ordered some parts on the phone one day. I asked the owner if he still had Tom. He said Tom was doing well and was eighteen years old and not missing a beat—the perfect fit for man and cat.

5 of my 7 cats are NON-working cats lol. We once had a mouse in my sons bed room and my older cats would not even look at it let alone get it. It came to the point when I had to put my semi-working cat right by it and finally he showed some interest. One thing with cats that I have came to understand is that you cannot make a cat do something it doesn’t want to do 🙂
