A Farm Cats Life in the Late 50’s and Early 60’s

I grew up on a farm with approximately ten cats. Our cats were excellent hunters.

All of our cats lived in a large barn with a hay loft. They would curl up in the hay in the hay loft to keep warm. The pigs and cattle in the barn provided some warmth for the cats. The Mother cats would nest in the hay where they had their kittens. Our largest litter of kittens was eight kittens. A typical farm cat has four to five kittens per litter.

A cat in the late ’50s and early ’60s was feed table scraps. The cats would come running up to the house for their table scraps. Our cats also ate scrambled eggs and warm oatmeal. Our cats were given milk to drink along with fresh water every day.

We had open corn cribs, which rats liked because they liked to eat the corn. We also had an empty feeder where our pigs ate. Our cats would quickly kill a rat when they noticed one. When our cat population grew to ten, we had no more rats on our farm.

I would pat my farm cats on the head every day. Our cats loved to follow me around our farm and keep me company. I would hold my cats on my lap or while I rode my tricycle. My cats were always very close to me when I would play outside as a child. I gave my cats a lot of love and attention.

Blacknose

Several of our farm cats lived to be ten years old. Most of our farm cats lived until at least eight years old. Farm cats get a lot of exercises, catching mice and birds and killing rabbits. Our farm cats would bring a dead mouse to the door every other day. They would see and kill field mice they caught in our field or ditches.

The life of a farm cat on our farm in the late 50s and early 60s was not too bad.
