Getting Attention

Showing Up Late

I do not appreciate it when people arrive late. If they want to spend their day that way, that is their choice; however, I will not waste my day, as life waits for no man. I cannot stand it when someone makes a grand entrance into a room full of people and walks to the front so all eyes are on them. People who do this must have low self-esteem. I have noticed this happen in a classroom and at church. If you show up late at an event, sit in the back and do not interrupt, as everyone is new enough to be punctual. One lady would announce at every event she attended that she was a Doctor’s wife. I say to myself, so what, as that does not make you better than anyone else in the room. If someone shows up late at your house, do not make a fuss over it or pay them a lot of attention, as that is what they want: all the eyes on them and them alone. Keep visiting with your other guest, and if you have already eaten, so be it. I refuse to heat food for someone who has kept me waiting for two hours. I used to have some rental homes, and after waiting 15 minutes, I would drive away.

Kids Miss Behaving

Kids will misbehave to get attention from their parents or others. Some kids will misbehave to get attention, even if it is negative. If the parents work long hours, their children do not get attention, so any attention is better than none at all. In the classroom, they may throw things at other students or write things on the blackboard. The worst behavior I noticed was in a college pottery class. The so-called assaults involved throwing clay all over the walls, and I told them to act like adults, stop it now, and clean up their mess. The teacher had heard me, which was lucky for me, as everyone else had to stay and clean the walls. For some reason, I was always the class monitor, even though it wasn’t assigned to me. I always want things to be orderly, and when kids or people act inappropriately, I step in and tell them to stop their shenanigans. I was the class monitor throughout school and college, and, surprisingly, they would stop their misbehavior immediately. I guess I sounded authoritative. Generally, the teacher would hear me, and the others had to clean up their mess. I got to go home. I never planned for the teacher to hear me, but somehow she always did. All of my teachers trusted me to bring graded papers to the Principal’s office or to get copies of papers students needed to read for the next day’s assignment. Get the right kind of attention. It is ok to get accolades for a job well done.
