What to do if Your Cat Sneaks Out of Your House

When My cat sneaks out of my house, I look all over for my cat at first and call to them. Sometimes my cat will show up about three hours later in the day. My cat wants to get familiar with his surroundings and explore the great outdoors.

My cat Catrenia was good at sneaking out of the house occasionally. I called and called her to no avail. I remembered she was familiar with the sound of my riding lawn mower. I got the lawn mower out and ran it next to the cornfield she had run into. I stopped the mower and called her to see if she would come to me yet. The sound of the mower directed her back toward my house, and I was finally able to get her back indoors.

I have set a dish of tuna with water outdoors to attract cats that have escaped out of the door. Sometimes my cat might be gone for about a week, but the smell of the tuna lures them back home. If you have a wild outdoor cat, put the tuna in a catch-and-release cage. My cat was in the cell in the morning, and the tuna was gone. I use this same method for catching cats that are hard to catch when it is time for their yearly shots.

When your cat is missing, call your neighbors and let them know, and put up posters that have a description of your missing cat. You can also place an ad in your local newspaper, social media platforms, and radio stations to inform your local humane society.

I had a female cat that I had for four years take off suddenly. In 8  years, she returned to my farm. I think the chip they put in the cat’s ear is an excellent idea. A vet scanned a chipset in a cat’s ear, and the cat has reunited with her family after fifteen years. She had been living 500 miles from her home. Cats can travel long distances. I hope you can find your cat if he sneaks out one day.

I think cats sometimes ave minds of their own when it comes to escaping and wanting to explore the outdoors. Mine usually just slink around if they get out. Having them chipped and with id on their collars helps make sure they can get home safely if they do get out. Great post, Laura.
