Cats Showing Off

Cats like and crave attention. I had a Red Tabby cat that would play with a circle game toy and he would make sure that everyone in the room was watching him. He had mastered that game to perfection and he wanted to make sure everyone knew that.

I had a black house cat that would walk across the curtain rod with the grace of a tight rope walker. He never once lost his balance while he performed his tight rope walk. We had a black outdoor cat that would balance up high on the feed door and then jump down on the shoulder of whom ever was by the feed door. She could really scare you at 5 in the morning when she landed on your shoulder.

I had a calico cat that would bring dead snakes homes and put them on my doorstep. I guess she wanted to show me what a brave huntress she was. I also had a gray and white female cat take on a skunk and she won the match except for a bite on her face which healed up quickly. She had her rabies shots up to date so I did not have to worry about that.

Cats love to do something naughty while you are talking on the phone. I guess they figure even negative attention is attention. They tend to jump on things that they know are off limits while you are talking away on the phone. I think they also figure that you are not going to interrupt your conversation to correct their bad behavior at that moment in time.

I had one cat climb to the top of the barn roof and she stayed up there for about two whole days before she came down on her own. When she was down she looked at me like were you really worried about me. She knew the answer to that question as I had been worried to death that she might fall down to her death.

Conrad

My house cat Conrad can get treats out of any treat dispenser ASAP. He has mastered all of the ones I have very quickly. He loves to play with circle ball toys and he is proficient with either paw he chooses to use at the moment. He will sit in the middle of the circle game and bat the ball one way and then the other way using a different paw each and every time.

Cats crave attention and they love to show off whenever and however they can. Cats are great entertainers. We would be lost without our cats and their performances.

My Maine Coon Cats Over The Years

My first Maine Coon cat was given to me by  one of my cousins. She was a purebred Maine Coon cat. She arrived at my house in a large wooden chicken crate. My Father told me to look in the crate and I was delighted to  have a new car in my life. She had an excellent disposition and she got along fine with my other cats. They are not lap cats. They get along very well with children. I would carry her around the farm and she would wait with me for the school bus to come and take me to school in the morning.

She had long hair that needed to be brushed out. One time she got in a burdock patch and it took quite awhile to get all of those out of her hair. One time Fresca lost her entire coat of fur. It more or less just all came off one day. She grew back a beautiful new coat of of fur. Some cats will have this happen to them. They can get a fungus or groom themselves too much. Take your cat to your vet if she loses her coat as he can help her. I named her Fresca after the Fresca soda pop.  She was a wonderful and kind cat. She lived to 12 years old.

Years later I had Leonardo and he would sit under an old weeping birch tree with me while I did my Algebra. Leonardo lived to ten years old and he was a red tabby color. Years later I had Fluffy and she had several short hair kittens. Fluffy’s Father looked identical to her with long red tabby color hair. Fluffy’s Mother was a gray tabby cat. Fluffy had several cream colored male kittens and a calico female kitten. Her calico kitten had  a black and white male kitten and another calico kitten.

I adopted Snowflake from a woman who’s Mother died and she had to find a home for her Mother’s cat. Snowflake was very friendly and loving. She liked all of my other cats immediately. She liked to be patted and brushed. She died at about age fifteen.

About 30 years after I had Fresca a male kitten named Cool Cat was born on my farm and he looked identical to Fresca after 30 years had passed. I gave him to one of my cousins and he is a house cat and  he is a cherished pet.

I now have Peter a beautiful bi-color black and white Maine Coon cat. He was born on my farm. His father was a black cat named Onyx that was part Siamese, Persian, Himalayan, domestic short hair and Maine Coon cat. His Mother was a gray tabby. Peter loves to watch me when I feed him and clean out the litter boxes in the morning.

I adopted Nola. She was part Maine Coon cat and Himalayan. She had Sophia, Lorenzo and Maxwell. Lorenzo is still alive and well. The rest of the cat family died very young. Sophia lived to be six years old. Nola died at age four. Maxwell was only one year old when he died. The average life span for Maine Coon cats is 10 to 13 years. A few have made it to 15 years.

I hope you may have the pleasure of owning a Maine Coon cat at sometime in your life. They are wonderful, kind  and loving house cats.

Transporting Your Cat Safely

Transporting your cat can be a major problem if not done correctly. Buy a cat carrier that is not easy for your cat to get out of. Cat carriers with cheap zippers are no good. If your cat squirms and pushes his head against the zipper he can get out and maybe get under your feet while you are trying to drive.

I like cat carriers that are of solid construction or ones that have sturdy zippers. Make sure the doors of your carrier are latched properly once your cat is in the carrier and also make sure the screws are tight that hold the carrier together.

Never wrap up your cat in towel and think he will not escape from you. Any cat in an unfamiliar area is extra nervous and will try to get out of your arms immediately. A vet once told me a lady had her cat in a towel and it escaped and hide by the school in that area. After looking for several hours she finally found her cat and her vet let her borrow one of his cages. Her cat could have run onto a busy highway in that area and gotten run over. She was lucky that her cat lived to tell his tale of momentary escape.

I do not turn on the radio in my vehicle while I am transporting one of my cats. Cats do not like loud music and it could stress them out more than they already are. The speakers in most cars are where your cat would be sitting and therefore the music would be extra loud with their keen sense of hearing.

Talk to your cat while you are traveling with him as your familiar voice will help calm him down. Put a few of his favorite toys in the cage. Place a couple of cat treats in the cage also. If your cat is extra nervous or hyperventilating spray some Pheromone spray for cats that helps calm them down on a piece of cloth and place it in the cage with your cat.

Hope you and your cat have safe travels and visits to your local vet for many years to come.

Why We Are Drawn To Cats

Cats facial features mimic a human baby and therefore we find them very appealing. Cats keep the rodent population down and protect us from diseases the rodents spread.  They sit on our laps and purr away and lick our fingers or rub against us. Having a feline friend reduces your blood pressure and helps reduce your stress also. Cats look as us lovingly and blink their eyes and roll over on their backs for belly rubs. When a cat rolls over on his back he is showing you that he trust you 100 %.

Cats Know Their Names

Cats do know their names. Cats choose to come to us only when they feel like coming to us. Research has been published in a nature magazine suggesting that 78 cats out of 78 cats new their name. Cats are very independent creatures and cope better at being alone than a dog.

Cats Improve Your Sleep

Sleeping with your cats can improve your sleep. People that let their cat sleep in bed at night with them tend to fall asleep faster. You keep your cat warm in bed and he keeps you warm . Your cats breathing pattern reduces stress and you feel at ease and relaxed.

Cats Like Us

You give your cat food and shelter and his natural instincts makes him want to be your pal. Cats follow us around because they like us and they want to know where we are when they feel hungry. Are cats rub against our faces because they want to put their scent on us. Their scent warns other cats that we already have a feline friend in our lives and that the new cat should back off.

Cats Are Relaxing To Watch

Just watching a cat at play or resting is very relaxing. Your cat is at peace and therefore you are at peace also. Cats are very entertaining. Some of the things that your cat does seem almost unbelievable. I had a pool table at one time and my Siamese cat would watch the balls roll into the pockets. She seemed to know almost before I did if the ball would make it in the pocket or not. Cats feel comfortable and safe in small spaces. I had a cat hide in a box of Christmas decorations and it took me along time before I discovered her hiding spot. My Grandmother had a cat that hid in a shoe box and the lid remained perfectly on top of the shoe box. A friend of hers discovered her cats hiding spot.

Living With A Cat Can Give You Nine Lives

I love holding my cats and patting them on top of their heads. I lavish them with toys and heated beds, water bowls, cat treats and all the affection that they can handle. I take them to the vet for their annual checkups and all of their necessary shots. I want my cats to live a long happy and healthy life. Cats ad to the spice of life. I am sure having cats in my life gives me nine lives also. My feline friends all have different and pleasing personalities. Curl up with your cat on your lap and think how you have blessed each other with your presence in each others life.

My Feral House Cat

A feral cat will never be a totally outgoing cat. If you rescue a feral cat take him to your vet for all of the necessary shots. Feral house cats seem to warm up to one person after awhile. Feral cats love to hide when any new comer enters your home. It takes a lot of time for a feral cat to trust you. The feral cat that you have rescued may have been abused by another person and has had to fend for itself for sometime now.

Feral Cat Behavior

I have had several feral cats over the years. Some of the feral cats that I have tried to tame would not have anything to do with me. The only time that they would let me come near them is when they wanted some canned tuna in water. Taking a feral cat to the vet is an experience that you will never forget. The wild young cats have bitten and scratched and more. The only safe way to catch a feral cat is in a fish net. Grab the cat my the nape of its neck while he is still in the fish net and drop him gently into the cat carrier.

Never bathe a feral cat because he will think you are trying to drown him. A dry shampoo for cats might work depending upon his temperament. Some feral cats leap and jump around in a room and try to climb your curtains. Place your  feral cat in a room by himself for awhile so you can see what he is up to in that one room before you have broken and destroyed items throughout your home.

Trust Issues With Your Feral Cat

Be very patient with your new feral feline friend. He is depending on you to take care of him and love him. If we have been mistreated it takes us a long time to trust again and your feral cat is no different. Do not expect too much of him all at once. He may always be somewhat of a loner. Remember he loves you because you gave him a second chance in life.  Eventually you will love one another and trust each other. God bless you for saving one of Gods creatures. May you and your cat have at least nine lives together.

The Calming Effect Of Cats

Cats are there for you when you come home from a hard day of work. Your cat sits on your lap and purrs away gently and licks your hand. Your cat is relaxed and you feel more relaxed also with your cats presence.

Cats love to play with toy mice and balls and catnip toys. It is fun and calming just to watch your cat play with his favorite toys. Cats are full of adventure and their various antics that put a smile on our face. Cats can sleep in the oddest and strangest positions. Garfunkel was sleeping on top of my refrigerator with his paws over his eyes to keep out the morning light. Conrad loves to sleep in a recliner with his long feet and paws hanging over the side of the recliner. Kohl sleeps in a heated cat bed and snores away. Garfunkel also sleeps in a thermal bed and Conrad likes a Meowfia cave bed that is made by women in Africa.

Calming Effects Of Cats

Just being around cats lowers your blood pressure and relieves a lot of stress and anxiety from your day. Cats show you unconditional love and companionship. Cats seem to know when you are feeling sick and they lay down next to you and comfort you to the best of their ability.

Cats Are very Loving Animals

Cats are very caring creatures. Cats will look at you lovingly and with soulful eyes. Your cat will never judge you or complain about unnecessary things. Cats are compassionate about helping out other pets also. My cats were best friends with a pet goat that I had at one time. My cats and the goat would sleep together in a large dog house. I once had a small dog that would share her house with one of my cats and all of her kittens and they would even go out hunting together. My small dog would babysit my cats kittens if she wanted to leave for a little while.

You Have Better Health With A Pet In Your Life

It has been proven that people that have pets have less health problems and live longer because of the calming effects that are pets have in our lives. A hectic day became a wonderful day once I came home to my beloved cat.

What I Look For In A Cat

I look for cat that is nice and clean. There eyes should be clear and bright, fur clean, clean hind end and the tail should be up as these are signs of a healthy cat. The cat should be calm and not too hyper and have an easy going personality. A cat that tries to nip and bite will probably present that same kind of behavior now and then the rest of its life.

The cats fur should not be matted or dirty. There face should not be all clawed up as this shows they like to get in a cat fight every so often. I lift up a paw to see if they might tolerate having there claws trimmed. I place the cat on my lap to see if they like to be held and pet. I also put a finger near there mouth to see if they want to try to bite me.

Is the cat you are thinking of adopting outgoing and exploring his surroundings ? A cat that is listless is probably sick. Have the cat checked over by a vet to make sure it does not have feline leukemia and other cat diseases. Cat diseases can be spread very quickly to your other house cats if there shots are not up to date.

Different breeds of cats have different personalities. Do you want a laid back cat or a very outgoing cat ? Read up on the different breeds of cats to see what breed would work the best for your household. I like cats that are part Siamese, Persian and domestic short hair as this blend seems to be the best combination for me.

My cat Kohl is a very easy going cat. Garfunkel is an excellent lap cat. Conrad is a one person cat and I am lucky he choose me for his person. Russ is a very tame and friendly cat. I have fourteen cats and all of them have there own unique and interesting personalities.

I hope you and your new feline friend have at least nine lives together and more.

Peter My Pet Cat

My cat Peter was one of Lizzie’s three kittens.  He is a gorgeous black and white long haired cat and he is part Siamese, Himalayan, Maine Coon and domestic short hair. His Fathers name was Onyx and he was a pure black cat. Onyx lived to be 15 years old.

Peter was born in an outdoor cat building that had a heated water bowl and heated cat beds. He would disappear the minute I would open the door of the cat building. He is still very shy yet. He does watch me when I clean out the litter boxes. He will come out for certain canned cat foods and cat treats.

I adopted a cat by the name of Addi from Wisconsin. She is part Silver Tabby. Peter found Addi irresistible and she had five kittens with Peter. They had Mr. Gray, Sherlock, Hilford, and Leo and Cleo that were adopted and they live the good life in their new home.

Peter helped Addi care for her kittens, He would play with them and they would snuggle up with him. Two of my neutered Toms Russ and Lorenzo would babysit the kittens. Addi would not let the female cats in the house near her kittens at all.

Peter and Addi are still very close. Peter and Addi are both fixed as I do not want anymore kittens. I have 11 cats in the other house and 3 cats in my house. Mr. Gray is friendly and Hilford and Sherlock take after their Father Peter as they are shy and reserved.

Peter will watch me on top of his cat tree to see when I might be coming over with cat treats or canned food for him and his family to eat. Sometimes I will see Peter come out of a large heated cat bed followed by Hilford, Sherlock and Mr. Gray and Addi or Nicole his sister. Since she is Peters sister she is accepted as part of their cat family. Conrad Peters brother is one of my house cats in my house.

Peter is gorgeous and he has a wonderful and excellent family that love and care for each other deeply. Purrs to you and yours.

Red’s Story

Red was a Red tabby cat. My vet gave Red to me after I had to put my Siamese house cat Sugar to sleep. My vet found Red abandoned on a golf course in the middle of December. My vets wife had trained Red to stay off of the counter tops.

Red got along fine with my other house cat Ginger that I had at that time. Red was very intelligent. If I would ask Red do you want to go outdoors he would head right toward the door. He liked to tease me when it was time for him to come back in my house. Red would take off running the moment I almost caught him to take him back into my house. Red would do this about three times before I could finally carry him back in my house.

Red’s favorite toy was a circle toy ball game. Red was ambidextrous and would hit the ball with either paw. Red also wanted to make sure you were watching him play his ball game. Red was very proud of the fact that he had mastered the circle toy ball game completely. I rescued a cat that I found under a car one day at a restaurant and I named him Philmoor. Philmoor caught on to the circle toy ball game immediately and Red felt bad about that unfortunately. Red hardly ever played with his favorite toy after  Philmoor mastered the circle toy ball game.

Red was a very friendly and outgoing cat. Red loved attention from other people and he actually thrived on it. Red liked to sleep on my bed at night along with my other two house cats.

At the age of 17 Red’s spine gave out. Red could no longer control his urine. My vet said some older cats develop a defect in their spine late in life. I had Red put to sleep at my vets office. Red was a wonderful , kind, outgoing and loving cat.

Different Cat Personalities

Siamese cats are very outgoing and very talkative. A purebred Siamese has a very high pitched meow. Sometimes they are a one person cat and do not do well with strangers. I had a purebred Siamese and she liked to jump on strangers heads. Siamese cats were trained to jump on peoples heads years ago. They were kind of like a small dog guard for the family. My cat Sebastian saw a man walking down my road at night and he let out a meow or wail that could literally wake the dead. I pulled my shade down and I thanked Sebastian for his heroic effort.

Himalayan cats are very quiet and never seem to meow much at all. They are very loving and very kind and they need a lot of grooming with their long hair. A Himalayan is a cross between a Persian and a Siamese cat. Persians have a short stubby nose and tend to be on the quiet side.

Rex cats do not shed and they have curly hair or no hair at all. Some of the hairless cats are quit long and resemble a Siamese cat that would have no hair. The hairless cats have a short life expectancy compared to other cat breeds.

I saw two Manx cats on the Isle of Man were they originated from. They were long and had no tails. They were very friendly and outgoing. They tend to have some health problems because they do not have a tail.

They are many more exciting and various breeds of cats to consider bringing into your household. Each and every cat seems to have its own distinctive and interesting personality that sets it apart from other cats or breeds.

All of the cats that I have now are domestic short hairs which is a combination of other breeds of cats. My cats are part domestic short hair, Siamese, Persian, Himalayan and Maine Coon. Most of my cats have a lot of Siamese and Himalayan in their genetic makeup. I had a purebred Maine Coon cat when I was six years old and she lived until I was sixteen and about forty years later I had a male cat born on my farm that looked identical to her.

My domestic short hair cats have lived to be eighteen years old. They are easy going and friendly and very loving cats. My cats are wonderful and loving companions. I hope you and your cats have a lifetime of friendship and many years together.
