Cats Behaving Badly

Cats Behaving Badly

Territorial Issues

A cat might pee on a cat bed to claim the bed as his own. Never give a cat a bed that one of your other cats has slept in for some time, as they will want to claim it by putting their scent on it. Please do not buy a used cat bed, as it will smell like an intruder, and your cat will spray it to put his mark on it. Cats will fight each other to maintain the top cat position in your household. Your cats may wrestle each other or have a boxing match. If they are declawed, they should not get harmed too severely. If your cats have claws, they may scratch the other one in the eye or dig into each other with those deadly weapons called claws. If you have two female cats in your home, they will want to be the top female cat. The female cats are nasty in their fighting maneuvers. Watch out for your older cats in your home, as you may have to put the newcomer in a separate room if they get too aggressive with your older cat. Ensure you have plenty of litter boxes, as cats do not like using another cat’s litter box. Some cats will stop using the litter box and start peeing on clothing, bedding, carpet, furniture, and dirt in your houseplants.

Climbing

Some cats love climbing up your drapes, clothing, and Christmas tree. I have had Christmas trees knocked over, and plastic birds chewed up. I had one cat that would balance on the curtain rod and walk across it like a tightrope. I had one cat sitting on the barn roof for one whole day before she came down. Some cats climb up high in a tree and then cannot figure out how to get down for some time. Cats that climb into a warm car engine on cold days generally lose their nine lives when the car is started.

Animal Fights

Cats can get badly injured from fights with Skunks, dogs, coyotes, and other cats. Many cats get killed by coyotes every year. A pack of dogs can come into your yard and destroy your cat if your cat happens to be outdoors. Some cats love to pick a fight with a dog that will most likely kill it. Tom cats can kill your Tom cats since they want to carry on their gene pool. Another Tom cat will kill your Toms’s kittens, so he can mate with your female cat and take on his gene pool.

Feral Cattitude

Some cats remain like feral cats for the rest of their lives. They will try to bite you even though you have had them as house cats for years. Feral cats tend to be aloof and spend time by themselves. A wild cat never learns to trust anyone or anything in its life. Feral cats will never become lap cats. I have loved all of my feral cats, even with their cattitudes.

Anxious Cats

Some cats are very nervous or skittish most o the time. My house cat Conrad is timid when people visit my house. Conrad will run and hide behind a piece of furniture in my home until the visitor leaves, or he has to run to the kitty litter box quickly. Some of my cats know when I will take them to the Vet for their annual shots, and they run, jump, climb, and do anything they can to avoid being put in their pet carrier. I put some kitty treats in my pet carrier so they will want to go in, which helps with some of them. There is a pet pheromone spray that you can spray on a towel in the cage to help calm them down for their visit to the Vet. Talk calmly to your cat as they pick up on your anxiety, and if they sense you are upset, they will be more upset than you are by far. Never yell at an anxious cat or scold them for not entering their pet carrier, as you will accelerate the situation and make it impossible for your cat and you. All of us are a bit anxious in unknown territory, and so are our feline friends.

Fight Or Flight

Some cats will run from a potential catfight, and others will stand and hold their ground firmly. Any of my cats with even a tiny amount of Siamese will not run. They will fight even a cat that is twice their size, and they never back down no matter what. Siamese cats were trained to jump on introducer’s heads in ancient Egypt. They would sit up high on the outside walls of the building and jump down and scratch up the intruder’s head. Any of my skittish cats will keep running and back down from the aggressive cat. Once in a while, I will see two cats at a complete standoff until one finally runs away. One time two of my cats had the same personality, and it was the fight response, and the fur went flying until the disagreement was settled. I had two Siamese house cats, and one was a visitor. The visiting cat wanted to eat my cat’s Dear friend, a parakeet. My cat gave the other Siamese cat a royal dressing down, and she never even looked at that bird for the rest of the afternoon.

Being Outdoors Can Be Scary For Indoor Cats

I like to keep my indoor cats on a leash when they want out so they will not run onto the road and get killed by a car or lost. I suggest a cat playpen for the overall safety of your house cats that want to be in the great outdoors now and then. A nasty old Tom cat could come and beat them up, or a wild animal may kill them. They may get injured by an animal and need medical attention, and you would not be able to find them in time as they would run off and die in a remote area. Sometimes it pays to be slightly anxious as it could save your life. Keep your cats safe, so they live their nine lives with you by their side.

Cats Never Miss An Opportunity

Escape Methods

Cats are always by the door when you are going somewhere. They were great escape artists who were just as good as the Great Houdini. Your cat can slip out of your door at lightning speed. If you have two entries on your entrance door and keep, one closed chance is, they will not escape. A home with one door is a problem as they can slip by entirely unnoticed. Be careful taking groceries into your home and put a sign on your door to let people that visit watch out for your escape artist cat. You could put a cat treat out before you leave; they will eat that and be occupied and happy to be indoors.

Slipping Out Of Your Arms As You Try To Put Them In A Pet Carrier

Cats know that pet carriers generally are what they go in on their way to the Vet. Cats become contortionists when it comes time to wiggle and maneuver out of something. I always put their hind legs in first, and not many have escaped from the carrier with that method. I had one cat that learned how to unzip her carrier bag. I put a safety pin between the two Zip pulls, and she could not figure out how to defeat that.

Cat Treats

Some cats will eat ravingly fast, so they can eat up all the cat treats that are put out for your cats. I put the treats out for each cat and watch them, so everyone gets a yummy treat. I have a cat treat ball, and one of my cats is very intelligent, and he gets the treats out ASAP. Other cats’ treat balls are more manageable than I use for my other cats. Some of my cats have finally mastered the rugged treat dispenser by watching my smart kitty.

Get The Other Cat In Trouble

I had a young female cat that would yowl and scream in cat language when my old male cat would enter the room. He was swatting at her when I entered the room. One day I saw who the actual aggressor was. My female cat beat him terribly, and I told her the jig was up. My older female cat got my young male cat in trouble. The Christmas tree had been knocked over, and I blamed the newcomer. My female cat knew I would not think it was her as she had not done anything like that before. I saw her trying to knock over the tree again since it had worked so well for her earlier.

Vying For Your Attention

Cats love to compete with each other. If we had a penny for our cat’s thoughts, all of us would be millionaires. Cats sit on your lap, bite the other house cat, and have your lap all to themselves. Cats love to cause a raucous when you’re on the phone as they get your attention. I ignore their antics when I am talking on the phone. We love the attention we get from our cats and love them no matter what opportunity they have to cause us a little extra work or worry. God bless our feline friends for the love, happiness, and joy they bring daily.

The Mellow And The Not So Mellow Cat

The Mellow And The Not So Mellow Cat

Female Cats

Female cats tend to want things on their terms all of the time. Female cats do not make as good of lap cats as males. They may sit on your lap for a while and then want down quickly. Female cats tend to have a lousy temper more often than their male counterparts. I had a purebred Siamese female house cat, and she would stare at you just before trying to strike your face. Never stare at a cat yourself; she views that as a treat and will try to attack you. I had one Siamese female cat that was very friendly, and she did make an excellent lap cat, but she was an exception to the rule. I had a black female cat when I was growing up that was very friendly and polite. My first cat was gray and white, and she was excellent with a small child picking her up and fusing over her. I have a female cat in my other house that is very handy with her teeth. She does not want me to touch her or pet her or and if I do, every time she tries to draw my blood, and she is excellent at that pursuit, unfortunately. I have had her since birth, but she considers me enemy number one; she likes my Vet and behaves like a little angel there. I think she prefers men to women on the whole. Female cats are probably slightly more defensive since they must protect and raise their kittens. Siamese and Calico cats seem to be the most unmellow of the female cats according to color and temperament.

Male Cats

Male cats make good lap cats and tend to put up with many people. I used to dress one of my male cats in doll dresses, and he did not mind it. Black cats tend to be the most mellow if you go by the colors of any cat colors. I have had several black male cats that were very mellow over the years, and most were well-behaved. I have two male house cats now, and they get along fine and will groom each other. My house cat Cali, who lives with my two male house cats, gets jealous of them sitting on my lap and will bite them to get a place on my lap. Garfunkel is a very kind and loving male cat who loves to sit on my lap every chance he can get and then purrs contentedly. Conrad was born and raised on my farm and is related to some of my original farm cats. He is timid but loves and is devoted to me only as he does not trust others. I prefer male cats as they tend to be more mellow and are not flighty. Whatever sex of cat you get, I am sure you will love it regardless of its ways and antics. I hope you and your cats have many happy and healthy days ahead.

Cats And Wild Animals That Become Friends

Cats And Wild Animals That Become Friends

Opossums And Cats

I have had opossums eat out of the same cat food dishes my cats eat. One older woman had a baby opossum in her home along with her pet cats. The opossum used the cat litter box and slept in the cat beds and her bed. She took her baby opossum to the Vet, where he had his shots and claws trimmed. He acted just like one of her cats and never tried to bite her. My outdoor cats would let them sleep in their heated cat houses in the winter months.

Raccoons And Cats

I have had many raccoons eat my cat food along with my cats. One raccoon bit my house cat on foot, and I had to bring her to my Vet for shots. Luckily, she had had her rabies shot and rec, covered from her foot bite. I never let her out of my house again after that incident. Raccoons can kill and eat your cats if they cannot find other food.

Skunks And Cats

Skunks and cats will share the cat food dishes, and I have never had a skunk spray my cats or me, thank goodness. I have seen skunks exit my cat building. I had one skunk that used to live under my deck, and she had her babies under the ramp. My cats never bothered her, and she never bothered them.

Mice And Cats

I have seen house cats hold a mouse between their feet to watch it and then let it run away. One cat had a pet mouse he would let sleep curled up in his hair at night. One male cat enables the mouse to eat and drink from his dishes. A family had three cats and one pet mouse. One cat loved the mouse, and the other two viewed it as a beautiful meal. The cat that loved the mouse made it his mission in life to save the life of his mouse friend at all costs, and he succeeded.

Birds And Cats

I had a cat that grew up in a house with parakeets before I adopted her.; I adopted a parakeet, and she dearly loved him. She would lay on the edge of the bed next to his birdcage and listen to him sing away every day. One day a cat came into our house that liked birds in another way, and my cat gave that cat a once over, and she never bothered her pet bird again. One crow fed a homeless baby kitten ground-up worms and saved the kitten’s life. I bet that kitten loved birds and protected them from other cats. I had an outdoor cat with a Blue Jay in her mouth, and I told her to drop it, and the Blue Jay flew away unharmed. I had one cat that grew up in a vet office, and he learned to like all kinds of animals.

Cats That Are Difficult To handle

Cats That Are Difficult To Handle

Cat Harnesses

Some of my cats love to walk on a cat harness. Cali loves to get outdoors and walk around with a harness on. I have to put a saddle on her because she is declawed and would be defenseless in the country without her front claws. Cali also needs a Lactaid ringer treatment once a week to help her kidneys eliminate toxins. Winchester used to love to go outdoors with a harness on. He is furious when I try to take the harness off, and he tries to bite me. I am not taking him for walks anymore. I put him in my cat’s outdoor playpen, and he seems OK.

Giving Your Cat His Meds

I have had a few cats that would swallow their pills right down. Most cats will wiggle, scratch, and do almost anything to get out of taking their Meds. I have a pill syringe for cats that works nearly every time I administer their Meds. I put liquid medicine in a dropper, place it in the back of their throat, and squeeze the dropper, and they generally swallow it down. Brushing your cat’s teeth work best with a small cat toothbrush. I have used the plastic ones that fit on your finger, only to have blood running down my finger.

Cat Grooming

I comb out my gentle cats first, and the more difficult ones can sit and watch. I had one cat that hated to be groomed, and after he sat and watched some of my other cats getting groomed and heard them purr, he let me groom him. Never groom or hold a cat against his will if you want to be able to help him out in the future. Cats that think they are not being treated right will avoid you at all costs. I have groomed some of my cats while they were eating a favorite cat treat or snack.

The Dreaded Vet Visit

Cats will hide when they think you are taking them to the Vet. Give your cat some of his favorite food and grab him by the nap of his neck and place him in your pet carrier. For the more wild cats in your household, catch them in a fish net, grab them by the nap of their neck, and put the rear end in the carrier first. Never put their head in the pet carrier first; they will wiggle and most likely out-maneuver you and escape. Make the ride to the Vet enjoyable for them. Do not play loud music in your car or get mad because they are meowing loudly. Your cat is afraid because he does not know what will happen to him. Talk to your cat gently and reassure him that everything will be OK. Give your cats some of their favorite cat treats when they behave at any task that has to be done to help them. I hope your next Vet visit goes well.

Life With Cats In Your Home

Life With Cats In Your Home

My First House Cat

My first house cat was Sugar, a Seal Point Siamese cat. She was set in her ways, and she had her routine. She did not like other cats except for one sicky little male kitten I bought into our home until he was well enough to go back outdoors again. She was very jealous if you paid attention to anything else but her. My Mother was working on genealogy, and Sugar chewed the corners off her papers. She also chewed the corner off of our new road atlas. If she got outdoors, she would try to get into fights with my other cats. Sugar ruled the roost. She was a wonderful lap cat, and I loved her Siamese voice. She would sleep on my bed at night. Once, I found her in my winter vest with just her head sticking out. She loved to play with sponges that she would toss around in the air. She grew up with a parakeet in her home, we had one, and she Dearly loved him. She sat on the tub’s edge and wailed for at least a week after my Mother died. I will always have fond memories of my first house cat, Sugar.

Two Cats In Our Home

I had Ginger, a Lynx point Siamese, and Red, a red tabby. I rescued Ginger from a shelter and cleaned her with a flea and tick solution. She felt and looked much better after her treatment. Ginger was a very loving and kind cat. Red was given to me by my Vet. Red was brilliant and had a circle game toy that he had perfected to a science. He would watch to see if you were watching him play. If you asked him if he wanted to go outdoors, he would come running lickety-split. I had Sly until two stray dogs killed him in my yard. He was such a loving and wonderful cat born on my farm. I let him out because his Mother and sister were still outdoor cats. After Ginger died, I found Philmoor hiding under the cars at a restaurant. He was a lovely and shy cream-colored cat with white socks and boots. Red was jealous of him because he caught onto his circle game toy immediately. He got liver cancer, and I had to have him put to sleep at the age of 10.

I Have Three Cats In My Home

I had Catrenia, a Russian Blue, until she got a kidney disease; my Vet had always wanted her, so he adopted her, and he can treat her, and she is doing fine at his house. I had to have Sebastian put to sleep because he got cancer of the sinuses and mouth. I still miss him very much. He was a very gentle and kind cat that loved everyone. I have Conrad, Garfunkel, and Cali in my home now. Conrad is my cat only, as he is a one-person cat. Garfunkel is very loving and playful, and very talkative. He is an excellent lap cat. Cali is doing fine with her lactaid ringer for her minor kidney disease. She gets two ml of the Lactaid water under the skin once a week to help filter the toxins out of her body as the water is absorbed into her skin. She is very playful and talkative. My cats have their favorite toys and sleeping areas. I could not imagine my home without a cat or two or three.

Cats Enrich And Bring Joy To Your Home

Cats are playful and loving and lay down on your lap and purr away contentedly. Watching your cats and seeing what cat antics they will perform or get into next is fun. Cats bring great comfort and joy into my life. I love watching my cats play with their cat toys and interacting with my cats. God, thank you for blessing us with felines on Earth.

Cats That Make Their Cat Toys

One of my cats used to play with old sponges that I had cleaned my kitchen sink. She would toss them up in the air and carry them around the house like she had caught a prized mouse. Some of my cats have played with the empty toilet paper rolls. Most of my cats like to play with small aluminum balls made out of aluminum foil. My cats have played with a lid from a small bottle as if it were a hockey puck. I have placed empty spools of thread on the floor, and my cats have rolled that around on the floor for hours upon end. My cats also enjoy playing with old wooden corks. Some cats like to take my ink pens and play with them. I once had a cat that would roll a lead pencil under my door, and he would wait until I rolled it back to him, and we repeated the process several times. One of my cats managed to get the clothespins off the clothesline, and he would take them apart and play with the pieces. I had one cat that would watch the pool balls go into the pool table’s pockets. I had a pet parakeet that my Siamese cat loved, and she would listen to him sing for hours. My outdoor cats have played with leaves as they blow around in the wind. Cats love to play with each other’s tails until one cat gets tired of it.

Cats With Creative Talents

I have one cat that drowns any mice he may see. I once had a cat that would walk along the curtain rod, and he would never lose his balance. Cats are excellent climbers but sometimes forget how high up they have ventured. My cats have always managed to get down again, but not nearly as gracefully as they did climb up. I have one cat that can open doors. He stands on his hind feet, uses his front paws to turn the doorknob, and goes off. I had one cat that left my farm for ten years, and then she returned home. I wish I could have asked her about her adventures while she was gone. I had a female cat that had our small dog babysitting her kittens for her while she went off hunting for the catch of the day. I have had outdoor cats stand by my door in the winter months, knowing I would let them become house cats because I could not see them shivering in the elements.

Never Underestimate The Intelligence Of Your Cat

I had a cat rent a house for me once. She turned on the answering machine, and that party left a message, and they ended up renting our home. A cat dialed 911 and saved his owner’s life. His owner had taught the cat how to dial 911, thinking the cat would not be able to, and the cat proved him wrong. A cat saved his family by alerting them to a dangerous gas leak outside their home. Cats awakened their owners when there was a fire in their home, and they got out safely. I had an outdoor cat come to the door that was having trouble delivering her kitten. I helped her, and all was well. God bless the beast and the children.

Cats At Play And More

Playful Kittens

Kittens love to play with their mother’s tail. Their mother will put up with it for a long time before she gives them a little tap on their nose. Kittens love to romp around and wrestle with each other. Kittens especially love to bounce around and get into things while you are sleeping or not watching them closely. Kittens will test their boundaries by jumping on your table, scratching your furniture, knocking things over, climbing your drapes, and more. Kittens will play with almost anything desirable to play within your home. Keep plastic bags, choking hazards, medicine, and poisons out of reach, as your kitten may play with them or swallow them and end up dying. Kittens love to play with small bright colored cat toys. Kittens are fun to have around; with your tender, loving care, you will have a loving feline companion.

Grown Cats At Play

Grown cats love to play with a live mouse by tossing it around before they kill it and eat it. My adult cats love to play with each other’s tails. My cats love it when one of my other cats licks and grooms his head for him. Adult cats love to get into mischief and run away quickly while your young cat is standing there, and you end up blaming the young cat, which is what they wanted all along. Cats are very jealous creatures and enjoy all of your attention, even if it is negative. My cats tend to act up when I am talking on the phone because they want my attention. I finally kept quiet as I stopped scolding them when they did that, and they soon stopped that annoying behavior. Grown cats love to get into hissing contests now and then, as that is one of their ways of declaring that they are the top cat in your house. Any cat that is part Siamese loves to pick a fight with any other cat in your house that they feel is a treat to their top cat ranking in your home.

Cats And Toys And Beds

Cali went through my house and picked out any toys my other cats had not played with, and she declared them as her toys. Cali is part Siamese and loves letting that shine through when she wants to. She has said herself the top cat in my house. My cat’s next door do not mind sharing their toys. My cats have picked out the beds they want to sleep in, and no other cat may enter but them or their select group. Some cats wish to have windowsill beds, heated small building beds, towels with cushions, or cat hammock scratching post beds with a ball attached. Circle game toys, catnip mice, bright colored balls,  small stuffed animals, and cat treat dispenser toys are their favorites. Cats are very playful, fun, and relaxing to watch. God bless our wonderful and loving feline friends.

Busy Cat Routines

Bird Watching 101 From A Cats Point Of View

My cats must watch birds every day. My cats compete for the best spot to manage them. The windows next door have large cat trees with the optimal bird-watching view. My cat’s next door take turns for these premium spots for bird viewing. Some of my cats chatter when they see a bird that wets their taste buds. They seem to talk if there is a large group of birds or a brightly colored bird. My house cats sit by my picture window and watch the birds that bird feeders attract. They will get excited and leap at the window when a bird sits on the ledge of the window outdoors. If a bird crashes into the window, they see if the bird survived or if there is an easy meal under it.

TV Favorite Programs For Cats

Conrad likes to watch Law and Order and a few other programs. Garfunkel likes to watch auto racing, Judge Judy, Gunsmoke, nature programs with animals, fish, PBS, Grey’s Anatomy, etc. Cali likes to watch cooking programs, sewing programs, and Martha Stewart.

Hunting

When I had outdoor cats, they would start the day hunting in the ditches for mice and other small rodents. Some of my faster and younger cats could bring down a rabbit which made for an excellent meal for all my outdoor cats. I had one cat kill a skunk. The Skunk ate off a small portion of her face. Luckily, her face healed, and you would never know that anything had happened to her. We used to have a dark-colored calico cat that would kill garter snakes, and she would leave the dead snake by our door. Several cats would leave their catch of the day by our door. They wanted to give us a fantastic present and show their love for us in their mindset. Ginger, my Siamese house cat, saved me from a bat when my house was re-roofed. She wore the bat out so I could get rid of it safely outdoors.

Important Playtime With Cat Toys

Cats always pick out their cat toys of the day from their toy box. Small stuffed animals, balls, singing birds, catnip mice, and circular cat ball towers are a must for my cats. My cats have a treat ball they have to spin around before treating their cat treats. Cats are like a fish on the end of a stick as they jump at it and hold it until you pull on it and repeat the process.

Exercise And Cat Naps

My cats love to run up and down my steps as one of their daily exercise routines. Getting into the proper position for the perfect cat nap takes a lot of time for my cats. My cat’s next door run after one another through the house. Cats love to wrestle with one another as a gentle form of play. My cats will groom each other to perfection, showing that they care for each other. All cats have busy cat routines; some are more active than others.
