How to Find a Good New Home for Your Cat or Kittens

If you are moving or your cat has kittens you cannot keep, finding a good and loving home for them is essential. I have put an ad under giveaways in my local newspaper. I mentioned that my Facebook page had kittens that needed a good home.

Addi and her kittens

When the party comes to look at my cat or kittens, I must find a new home; I ask them if they have ever had a cat. If they say yes, I know they know something about caring for a cat. I watch my cats react to them while they are holding him. If my cat or kitten growls or hisses at them, I do not feel comfortable giving them my cat. I let my cat judge who they want to live with. If your cat feels uncomfortable with the party that has come to look at them, you better feel uncomfortable with them. Cats are excellent judges of character.

Sherlock as a kitten

For all of the cats or kittens I  have had to find a new home for, I call the party that has adopted them and ask how they are getting along. One woman told me she liked her cat so much that she had adopted it from me that she also had to get another cat. I also ask the people that have adopted my cat to send pictures of my cat to me, and then I can see how well my cat is coming along in his new home.

When you have to find a new home for your cat or kitten, let the newly adopted pet parent know what your cat likes to eat and what their favorite brand of cat litter is. I have also sent some cat food and litter home with my new pet parent. Tell your new pet parent to call you with any questions or concerns that they may have about their new cat. I also give them a copy of my cat’s vet records.

I hope you can find a kind and loving home for your cat if you have to move or can no longer keep your beloved cat for some reason.

Training Your Cat 101

Training Your Cat 101

To Walk With A Harness On

Getting your cat to walk with a harness takes time and patience. Your cat may lie down, thinking he cannot walk with the harness on. Give your cat a treat whenever he lets you put the harness on him. Give your cat a treat if he enables you to take the harness off without trying to bite you. Do not pull or drag your cat. Let him take the lead and reward him when he walks beside or before you.

Clicker Training

I worked with my cat Cali and told her she was a good cat before I clicked my ink pen about five times. The next time I said she was a good cat, she came to me without clicking the ink pen. If you want your cat to come to you when you call her name, click the ink pen and then say her name and give her a treat every time she comes when you call out her name. You can buy a store-clicking device, but my ink pen works fine. You can train your cat to jump through hoops using the clicker and treat method. Cats only have to see something once and remember it, but repetition instills it in their mind.

Oral Command Training

If you see your cat slapping another house cat, say their name and bad kitty. Never hit, scream, or yell at your cat; they will learn to avoid you like the plague. If your cat stops using the litter box, it may be because another cat is hogging it. Buy another litter box and do not get mad at your cat, and reward him with a treat when you see him using the litter box.

Consistency When Training Your Cat

If your cat does what you want him to remember, always treat him until he has mastered the task. Never provide a reward now and then, as your cat will not know what you want him to do. Never give just one of your cats a treat. Give each cat in your household a reward that learns something new. Do not be wishy-washy and correct your cat when he jumps on the table, and the next minute, you are okay with him on the table. Cats learn from your body language and the tone of your voice.

Training Your cat To Use A Kitty Treadmill

Tape cat treats to your treadmill that your kitty can eat if he runs around the track. You could also tie cat treats on a string taped to your kitty treadmill. Keep treating your cat on the treadmill until he enjoys running around and burning off those unwanted pounds. Your other cats will try to imitate your cat on the treadmill or jump on with him. I had a housecat that would run behind me on my treadmill. Whatever you want your cat to learn and accomplish, he can if you are consistent and patient with your beloved pet cat.

Prevent the Spread of Diseases

Keep Your Cats Bedding and Litter Boxes Etc. Clean to prevent the Spread of Disease

Vacuum your cat’s beds or wash them at regular intervals. I have towels that my cats sleep on. I sanitize the towels in my washing machine with lots of detergents and hot water.

I scrub out their litter boxes regularly. I use dishwashing soap, a scrub brush, rubber gloves, and hot water. Take the dirty litter box outdoors and scrap everything you can off of the litter box before you clean it in your basement. I like to hose down the litter box and clean it outdoors before I bring it to my house to complete the cleaning process. After you wash the litter box with detergent and hot water, let it dry out completely before you fill it with fresh kitty litter.

If your kitty throws up a hairball, clean it up immediately. Use a cleaner that is pet safe. I use cleaners that are only pet safe. I like Nature’s Miracle Cleaner. It indeed does work miracles. I wash the wood floor in my house with pine – sol. I finish by putting a hardwood and laminate cleaner that is pet approved on my wooden floor.

I scrub my floors in the house next door with a steam cleaner. The steam cleaner kills all the germs safely and quickly. I also run a dehumidifier in my place in the summer months to eliminate all dampness that can cause mold and mildew, making our cats sick.

I vacuum my carpets every other day. By cleaning every other day, you pick up cat hair, dandruff, and flea eggs lurking in your carpet. You can eliminate a lot of allergens for you and your cat by vacuuming regularly.

Keep all of your cat’s grooming tools and litter box tools clean. I use dishwashing soap on them also with plenty of hot water.

I hope you and your cat stay disease free.
